Falcon & Winter Soldier Confirmed To Be Set Immediately After Avengers: Endgame

Set photos from Marvel’s Falcon & Winter Soldier series confirm the show is set immediately after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the greatest success stories in the history of Hollywood. It’s an innovative shared universe consisting of (currently) 23 interlinked movies and combined it’s grossed over $22 billion in the global box office. Avengers: Endgame became the highest-grossing movie of all time, beating Avatar‘s record.

The MCU is about to expand onto the small screen, with a range of Disney+ TV shows closely connected to the movies. The first of these is The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, starring Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie as the titular hero. It deals with the question of who will wield the shield of Captain America, now that Steve Rogers is no longer serving as the Star-Spangled Avenger. Set photos have finally confirmed how closely it will be connected to Avengers: Endgame.

Murphy’s Multiverse has obtained set photos revealing the show is set in 2023, shortly after Avengers: Endgame. The set photos show adverts for the 2023 G20 summit at New York, an annual meeting of representatives of the world’s most powerful and influential nations. It looks as though the G20 comes under attack from a group of female terrorists, and John Walker’s Captain America and the Winter Soldier leap into action.

The G20 focuses on the governance of the global economy, with each summit dedicated to a particular theme. It’s safe to assume that, in the MCU, the 2023 G20 will be focused on the immediate and unexpected restoration of half the living beings on Earth. Marvel has been criticized for avoiding dealing with the repercussions of the various snaps, which would have plunged the world into social and economic chaos. It now looks as though The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will, in part, be Marvel’s answer to that criticism.

Meanwhile, this adds important context to the US Government’s quest to find a new Captain America. Spider-Man: Far From Home revealed the Avengers lied to the world, telling the public Steve Rogers had died in the battle against Thanos. The country is in mourning for its fallen son, and no doubt, politicians are keen to recreate the patriotic symbol of Captain America in this time of unrest. Sam Wilson isn’t their first choice; he’s either unwilling to accept the shield or the US Government refuses to believe he’s the right choice. Either way, they hurriedly choose John Walker – and presumably don’t take the time to vet him carefully.

It will be fascinating to see Winter Soldier’s new status quo in a post-Avengers: Endgame MCU. In theory, he should still be one of the world’s most wanted, but he was able to openly attend Tony Stark’s funeral. That suggests he’s struck some sort of deal, possibly with strings attached; it may be that he’s been forced to work alongside the US Government’s choice of the new Captain America.
