“Fairytales Are Considered Groaners”: David Lynch’s Animated Movie “Rejected” By Netflix, Details Revealed

David Lynch‘s animated film Snootworld is not moving forward at Netflix, but the creator has revealed more details about the family film. Lynch is best known for his surrealist filmmaking, applied to his best-known work such as Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, and Mulholland Drive. His latest work in film and television was a series of short films in 2020, though he has also produced an assortment of web content since then.

Speaking with Deadline, though, Lynch and co-creator Caroline Thompson revealed their planned animated film Snootworld has been rejected at Netflix. Despite this, both of them intend on still finding a way to create the movie. The Twin Peaks creator revealed his intention to create a family feature using his story about “Snoots,” while Thompson explained what the exact story of the planned movie will be about. Check out what Lynch and Thompson had to say below:

David Lynch: I don’t know when I started thinking about Snoots but I’d do these drawings of Snoots and then a story started to emerge. I got together with Caroline and we worked on a script. Just recently I thought someone might be interested in getting behind this so I presented it to Netflix in the last few months but they rejected it. Snootworld is kind of an old fashioned story and animation today is more about surface jokes. Old fashioned fairytales are considered groaners: apparently people don’t want to see them. It’s a different world now and it’s easier to say no than to say yes.

Caroline Thompson: It takes my breath away how wacky it is. The Snoots are these tiny creatures who have a ritual transition at aged eight at which time they get tinier and they’re sent away for a year so they are protected. The world goes into chaos when the Snoot hero of the story disappears into the carpet and his family can’t find him and he enters a crazy, magnificent world.

Snootworld Would Be A Unique Direction For Lynch’s Film Career

Although Lynch’s family film isn’t going to be moving forward at Netflix, these new details from him and Thompson confirm they still want to make the movie come to life. While it’s unclear if Lynch himself will tackle the co-writing and directing of the movie, the possibility remains open. He’s also mentioned his daughter, Jennifer Lynch, taking on the project, but that too remains up in the air. For now, Snootworld is an idea that could become a feature film at some point in the future.

While Lynch has plenty of unrealized projects, he’s been working on this animated feature for the last two decades, indicating how dedicated he is to making it a reality. This would be a far cry from the work he’s most known for, which are made for older audiences and feature more complex themes. While the premise of Snootworld goes hand-in-hand with the surrealist nature of the filmmaker’s work, its family-oriented story could lend itself to wilder occurrences happening.
