Foundation creator David S. Goyer reveals that he already has plans for up to season 8 of his popular sci-fi series. First released on Apple TV Plus in 2021, Foundation quickly announced itself as one of the most ambitious science fiction shows of the last decade, following various figures across the galaxy in stories that span hundreds of years. The series, which is loosely based on the works of Isaac Asimov, just recently concluded season 2, but Apple has yet to officially renew it for season 3.
Now, in a recent interview with TheWrap following the explosive Foundation season 2 finale, Goyer reveals that his plans for the series go well beyond a season 3. In fact, the creator has a clear endgame in mind that could stretch up to a season 8. Check out Goyer’s full comment below:
“We have through Season 4 fairly rigorously plotted out, and then if we can get beyond Season 4, we’ve got some big tentpoles that we know we’re riding towards and kind of 5, 6, 7 and 8 I know where most of the characters end and whether that be in Season 4 or Season 6, we’ll move it down or up the scale depending on how many seasons we get. It’s possible we could be surprised but all the major characters, I pretty much know what their fate is.”
How Many Seasons Will Foundation Actually Get?
Foundation season 2 was announced before season 1 had even finished airing, speaking to Apple’s confidence in the show and it’s viewership performance. Season 2 earned rave reviews from audiences and critics alike, but Apple has not yet confirmed that season 3 is moving forward. Chances are looking good, however, because, despite the fact that Apple does not release viewership data, several metrics suggest that season 2 of the series has been popular – plus Goyer himself is confident that Foundation season 3 will happen.
Despite the show’s continued popularity, Apple TV Plus doesn’t currently have too many shows that go beyond season 3. Ted Lasso, for example, which is likely considerably cheaper to make than Foundation, ran for three seasons, as have shows like See and The Morning Show. For All Mankind, one of the streamer’s more popular offerings, is, however, confirmed to be returning for season 4.
The main reasons for this, of course, is due to the fact that Apple TV Plus is only about four years old as a service. Unlike Netflix, which has been around for a lot longer and has cancelled and renewed many more shows, there aren’t really any Apple TV Plus precedents to look at regarding how long Foundation might run for. As long as the show continues to be popular and can justify its own cost, however, it’s very possible that Foundation season 8 will see the light of day.
