“Expand The Extraction Universe”: Idris Elba’s Surprise Extraction 2 Role Explained

Extraction 2 marks another major Marvel reunion between Chris Hemsworth and Idris Elba, and director Sam Hargrave teases it’s only the beginning. The Netflix sequel sees Hemsworth stepping back into the shoes of mercenary Tyler Rake as he is hired to rescue his ex-wife’s sister and her kids from a Georgian prison, where they’re being held by her gangster husband. Hemsorth is joined by new and familiar faces for Extraction 2, including Golshifteh Farahani, Adam Bessa, Olga Kurylenko, and Tinatin Dalakishvili, as well as an A-list actor kept under wraps until now.

Ahead of the film’s release, Screen Rant spoke exclusively with Sam Hargrave for an in-depth discussion on Extraction 2. When asked about Idris Elba’s surprise role in the sequel, the director said it was a combination of luck from Hemsworth and writer Joe Russo’s Marvel past with the actor and plans to “expand the Extraction universe” with new sequels and potential spinoffs. It was a little bit of all of the above, meaning we knew that Joe had always wanted to expand the Extraction universe, and to populate it with super talented actors who could carry their own movies in this universe and start their own franchises. It just so happened that Chris Hemsworth knew a very talented actor in Idris Elba, and when he reached out and when Idris said, “Yes,” we were all just like, “Oh my gosh, we got to see where this goes.” Then, it just worked so well, the two of them sparkle on screen, there’s a chemistry that you can feel, it’s palpable, and it’s such a great thing to watch. Shooting with those two was such a pleasure every time we got them together. It was only a couple of days, because Idris was in and out, but that time was really fun, those two get along really great and have a special chemistry on screen.

Idris Elba’s Mysterious Extraction 2 Character Explained

Though not the first major star to share the screen with Hemsworth in the Extraction franchise after David Harbour in the original movie, Elba’s role in Extraction 2 came as quite a surprise, having been kept under wraps over the past year and a half. The fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe alum was revealed in a new trailer just over a week prior to the movie’s release, humorously sharing his joy of repeating Hemsworth’s character name, with a plot description indicating he presents Rake with the mission.

With these new details in mind, including Hargrave’s note above of only directing the star for a couple days, it seems likely that Elba’s Extraction 2 role is not much more than a cameo, showing up near the start of the sequel to put Rake on his new mission path. The question then becomes whether Elba’s character shows up near the end of the movie, or in a credits scene, for a tease of the next chapter in the Netflix action franchise.

Both Hemsworth and producers the Russo brothers have teased their hopes for an Extraction 3, indicating the former’s action hero survives the events of Extraction 2 to fight another day. As Hargrave mentions above, Elba and Hemsworth’s chemistry was a highlight only somewhat capitalized on during their tenures in the MCU, and would be a fun way to expand the Netflix franchise with a sequel and spinoff centered on the former’s mysterious character.
