Exorcist: Believer Could Break The Franchise’s 50-Year-Old Box Office Record

The Exorcist: Believer could break a box office record for the franchise. The upcoming movie is the sixth entry in the movie series that began with the 1973 classic The Exorcist, based on the William Peter Blatty novel of the same name. Believer was directed by David Gordon Green and follows a father (Leslie Odom Jr.) who seeks the help of legacy character Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn) when his own daughter gets possessed along with a friend of hers.

Per Deadline, projections ahead of the Exorcist: Believer release date on October 6 are quite strong. The movie is currently expected to open at $30 million or more, which would make it the best opening weekend since the original, handily beating the previous record-holder, 2004’s Exorcist: The Beginning ($18 million). At the time the original Exorcist was released, opening weekends weren’t measured, so there isn’t a solid number available for that title. While it seems unlikely that Believer could compete with the smash hit original if adjusted for inflation, there is a chance that the raw number could be higher.
