Evil Dead Rise Trailer Reveals Necronomicon, Chainsaws & Lots of Gore

The full trailer for Evil Dead Rise has arrived. The film is the latest entry in the deceptively sprawling Evil Dead franchise, which stars Bruce Campbell as intrepid S-Mart employee Ashley J. Williams, better known as Ash, who fights off Candarian demons hellbent on possessing human flesh. After being introduced in Sam Raimi’s 1981 original The Evil Dead, the director and star collaborated on 1987’s Evil Dead II and 1992’s Army of Darkness. The franchise then went dormant until the 2013 remake Evil Dead, which starred Jane Levy, before returning fully to the Ash storyline with the Starz series Ash vs. Evil Dead, which ran for three seasons beginning in 2015. Evil Dead Rise, coming April 21, 2023, will return the franchise to the theaters with another loosely related story.Yesterday, Campbell (who is a producer on the film though he won’t be appearing in it) shared a sneak peek at Evil Dead Rise, promising that a full trailer would be released the following day. True to their word, Warner Bros. released the full trailer this morning. It offers a closer look at the Los Angeles family who will find their apartment transformed into a charnel house of gore and terror before long. Everything Revealed In The Evil Dead Rise Trailer

Evil Dead Rise Trailer Reveals Necronomicon, Chainsaws & Lots of Gore

The Evil Dead Rise trailer offers a lot of clues as to what the overarching story is going to be. The synopsis has already revealed that the titular evil will descend upon single mother Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) when she is being visited by her sister Beth (Lily Sullivan), but the trailer offers a much closer glimpse into how the family dynamic operates, especially as it relates to the youngest child, played by Nell Fisher of My Life is Murder. Beth certainly seems to be the protagonist of the film, doing whatever it takes to defend her family from a violently twisted maternal figure that is ready to inflict torture of all kinds, including a terrifying moment involving a cheese grater.

There are also more than a few moments that imply major ways that the film will be connected to the overarching franchise as a whole. For one thing, there are frequent shots of a dock on a lake where it seems that a possession originally took place, which could imply that the film will return to the same cabin in the woods where the demonic chaos began over four decades ago. The book that summons the demons is also familiar, though it seems to have gotten a facelift, appearing different from the design of either the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis or the Naturom Demonto, the two books that have appeared over various continuities, though presumably, it is merely a different copy of one of those titles.

The Necronomicon in Evil Dead Rise

There are quite a few more specific references to the previous Evil Dead movies hidden in the trailer for Evil Dead Rise as well. Some are obvious, including the heroine wielding a chainsaw as well as the record that plays the demonic chant that summons the Candarian demons. However, others are more subtle, including a shot where the camera is swooping through the woods, a reference to the low-fi Steadicam-style shots from the original The Evil Dead, where Raimi and his crew jerry-rigged their own method of holding the camera aloft while zooming around, evoking the demonic spirits with a series of shaky POV shots.
