Everything We Know About Quantum Leap Season 1, Part 2

This article contains spoilers for Quantum Leap episode 8.NBC’s Quantum Leap relaunch has taken a break after episode 8, and will return on January 2, 2023. The classic series of Quantum Leap ended on a cliffhanger, revealing Scott Bakula’s Dr. Sam Beckett never returned home. Rather than reboot the show, NBC’s Quantum Leap is a relaunch that picks up 30 years later, exploring the legacy of Sam and his friends.

Quantum Leap stars Raymond Lee as Dr. Ben Song, a quantum physicist who’s stepped in Sam Beckett’s footsteps by entering the Quantum Leap accelerator. His holographic adviser is Addison Augustin, Ben’s fiancée, played by Caitlin Bassett. In a marked departure from the original series, the relaunched series has focused as much on the present day, building up a strong supporting cast including Ernie Hudson as project director Herbert “Magic” Williams, Mason Alexander Park as programmer Ian Wright, and Nanrisa Lee as security chief Jenn Chou. Quantum Leap‘s midseason finale was an explosive one, promising answers in the second half.

Quantum Leap‘s midseason finale ended with confirmation the show will return on Monday January 2, 2023, at 10.00 PM ET. NBC released an official trailer giving a hint of the chaos to come, with Ben continuing his missions to rewrite history. He isn’t trying to change the past; he’s trying to avert a future tragedy.

NBC originally only booked 12 episodes, but Quantum Leap seems to have been a tremendous success for the network; they ordered another six episodes after the first two had aired, bringing season 1’s episode count to 18. This presumably means the first four episodes to air after Christmas were intended to complete the season 1 arc, which has been extended. Hopefully this means more of Quantum Leap‘s mysteries will indeed be explained.

Quantum Leap Season 1, Part 2 Story: What Part 1 Sets Up

Caitlin Bassett plays Addison in Quantum Leap 2022

The classic series of Quantum Leap was known for its episodic structure, but the relaunch has embraced a more serialized narrative. It’s driven by a single mystery; the reason Ben stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator in the first place. One of the world’s foremost quantum physicists, Ben has figured out how to build up enough temporal momentum through leaps to actually reach the future. Quantum Leap‘s midseason finale revealed he is working to save his fiancée, Addison, from an unknown tragedy he has somehow become aware of. This foreknowledge appears to be due to an encounter with another leaper from the future, one who unwittingly conveyed information about events to come. Quantum Leap is using time travel as far more than a mere plot device, meaning Quantum Leap‘s return should involve escapades unlike anything seen by Sam Beckett.

Quantum Leap will return on NBC on Monday January 2, 2023. The episode will be available for exclusive streaming on Peacock the next day.
