Everything We Know About Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies Season 2

WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Rise Of The Pink Ladies! Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies’ final episode both concludes the season’s plot while leaving some details unresolved, seemingly setting up season 2 for the Paramount+ series. Set four years prior to the original Grease movie, Rise Of The Pink Ladies follows the origins of the titular greaser group and the Rydell students who start it. Initially a ragtag group of outcasts, Jane (Marisa Davila), Olivia (Cheyenne Isabel Wells), Nancy (Tricia Fukuhara), and Cynthia (Ari Notartomaso) eventually become close friends and use their new group to try to make Rydell High a more accepting place.

The first season of Rise Of The Pink Ladies enhances Grease’s story and develops the franchise’s new characters, but the huge events of its season finale leave their futures uncertain. In the last episode, Jane and Susan (Madison Thompson) drag race to see whether Buddy (Jason Schmidt) or Richie (Jonathan Nieves) should return to Rydell after their expulsion, and even though Susan wins, Buddy forfeits his chance to return. Toward the end of the episode, Hazel (Shanel Bailey) officially joins the Pink Ladies, rounding out the group’s ranks. Rise Of The Pink Ladies closes with a bombshell cliffhanger that teases an appearance from a Grease legacy character, which can only be explored in Rise of the Pink Ladies season 2 — although the future of the series is far from certain.

Everything We Know About Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies Season 2

Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies season 1 ending was a major cliffhanger, which seemed to be setting up the Paramount+ show’s season 2. Fans hoping that Rise of the Pink Ladies season 2 would debut on Paramount+ in the next year, however, will be disappointed. The latest Rise of the Pink Ladies news is that Paramount has opted to cancel Rise of the Pink Ladies, alongside several other shows, and remove them from the streaming platform.

Rise of the Pink Ladies creator Annabel Oakes took to social media to confirm to fans of the show that the cancelation news was true. Oakes called the removal from the Paramount+ streaming platform “a brutal move” as it means fans won’t get to rewatch the show. Oakes did, however, note that music will remain even after the removal of the show, which is likely because the music is available to purchase or stream on other platforms.

Rise of the Pink Ladies season 2 being canceled isn’t entirely without hope. Paramount isn’t opting to simply write off these removed shows for tax breaks as has been seen in recent sweeping cancelations by other streamers like MAX. Instead, Paramount is allowing the shows, including Rise of the Pink Ladies, to be shopped to other streamers and networks. Another company could still purchase the rights to the first season and renew the show for season 2.

Why Rise Of The Pink Ladies Season 2 Was Canceled

Rise Of The Pink Ladies Season 2 was canceled as part of Paramount’s merger with Showtime. Alongside Rise Of The Pink Ladies, Paramount also canceled Star Trek: Prodigy, The Game, and Queen Of The Universe. The full statement from Paramount indicates that the decision was made based on how well the shows fit in with the incoming slate of Showtime series as well as actual streaming numbers for the show. The full statement from the company:

“In the unified Paramount+ with Showtime plan, the Showtime portfolio of edgy, critically acclaimed programming will complement the broad and popular Paramount+ library in a seamless offering that appeals to everyone, enables more discovery between the brands and builds overall viewership.

As we prepare to combine Paramount+ and Showtime later this month in the U.S., we are refining our content offering to deliver the best streaming experience for subscribers. This is consistent with our content strategy since launch and across our business, which ensures we make smart, efficient choices, informed by audience data and insights. We are removing select programming as we look to optimize Showtime’s robust slate of premium originals.

The Paramount+ series ‘Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,’ ‘Star Trek: Prodigy,’ ‘Queen of the Universe’ and ‘The Game’ have completed their runs on Paramount+ and will not be returning to the service. We want to extend our thanks to our tremendously talented cast and crew and our producing partners for their passionate work and dedication on these programs and we wish them all the best on their future endeavors.”

It’s an unfortunate reality of the entertainment industry that movies and shows that don’t make a profit for a studio don’t get sequels or additional seasons, despite the love from a dedicated fanbase, and Paramount only opting to cancel and remove four of their shows ahead of the merger actually speaks to the larger success of the streamer.

Although Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies hasn’t been renewed for season 2, it’s still possible to speculate on when season 2 could premiere based on the first season’s production history. Rise Of The Pink Ladies season 1 began filming in January 2022, and the series premiered in April 2023. With this timeframe in mind, Rise Of The Pink Ladies season 2 release date could potentially be in mid- to late-2025, provided it gets picked up for another season by a different studio or network. However, given the ongoing 2023 WGA strike, Rise Of The Pink Ladies season 2 could potentially be pushed back to 2026 depending on the strike’s outcome.

Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies Season 2 Cast

A true ensemble show, the finale of Rise Of The Pink Ladies season 1 seems to suggest that much of the Grease prequel’s cast could return in season 2. All the Pink Ladies, including their newest addition Hazel, and the T-Birds can return to reprise their roles in season 2. Many of Rydell’s popular kids, like Wally (Maxwell Whittington-Cooper) and Susan, could also return to oppose the Pink Ladies in the next season. The younger versions of Rizzo (Emma Shannon) and Frenchy (Madison Elizabeth Lagares) could also come back to the Rise Of The Pink Ladies cast in season 2, where they could potentially play an even bigger role to set up their Grease arcs.

Rise Of The Pink Ladies’ season 1 ending also teases new additions to the Paramount+ show’s cast of characters. It is teased that Assistant Principal McGee (Jackie Hoffman) could get an assistant, a role held by Blanche in the original Grease, who will need to be cast should that desire come to fruition. Most notably, a mysterious figure who is referred to as Frankie Zuko by Gil (Nicholas McDonough) and Jane is introduced at the end of the season 1 finale. Frankie is offscreen during his introduction, meaning his casting is still unknown, but his shared history with the existing Pink Ladies characters is sure to stir up drama among the Rise of the Pink Ladies cast in a potential season 2.

Of Rise Of The Pink Ladies season 1’s main cast, there are two characters whose return for season 2 of Rise of the Pink Ladies isn’t guaranteed. After Buddy forfeits his chance to return to Rydell High at the end of season 1, his story in Rise Of The Pink Ladies season 2 is unclear. However, since Buddy has a major arc in the latter half of season 1, he will likely return to the show in some capacity. The other character whose reappearance isn’t guaranteed is Richie, who is noticeably missing from episodes 9 and 10. Though Richie is welcome back at Rydell, time will tell whether Johnathan Nieves will reprise his role.

Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies Season 2 Story Details

Since Rise Of The Pink Ladies season 1 ends with multiple loose ends and cliffhangers, the show’s potential second season already has plenty of story material. Season 2 of the Grease prequel would likely pick up where the first season left off, dealing with the aftermath of Frankie Zuko’s introduction. The mysterious nature of Frankie Zuko means there is plenty to explore with his character, particularly how he fits into the T-Birds as well as his complicated past with Jane. While the Pink Ladies and the T-Birds have been friendly throughout the Grease prequel, Frankie’s appearance could complicate the greaser groups’ dynamics in Rise of the Pink Ladies season 2.

Frankie Zuko is the biggest bombshell the Rise of the Pink Ladies story in season 2 must deal with, but there are still plenty of other potential plots for season 2. Should he return, Buddy will have to adjust to his new reality after leaving Rydell High and his dad behind. Additionally, Hazel is learning the ropes of the Pink Ladies and struggling with her “two boy problem.” Season 2 will likely see Hazel eventually have to choose between Wally and Buddy, which will undoubtedly stir up drama. Should Rise Of The Pink Ladies season 2 get picked up, the Pink Ladies will have many more memorable adventures at Rydell, expanding the Grease franchise even further.
