Everything Daisy Ridley Has Revealed (& Hinted) About Her Next Star Wars Movie

Everything Daisy Ridley Has Revealed (& Hinted) About Her Next Star Wars Movie

Precious little is known about Daisy Ridley’s upcoming Star Wars movie, tentatively titled “New Jedi Order,” but here’s everything the actress herself has revealed. Directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Rey’s New Jedi Order movie – first announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023 – will be set 15 years after the Star Wars sequel trilogy. It is one of four upcoming Star Wars movies, with no official release date confirmed at this stage.

This remains one of the most exciting Star Wars movies in the works right now, not least because it finally moves on from the Skywalker saga, introducing a new version of the Jedi Order – one that has hopefully learned from the prequel trilogy. There have been several exciting updates over the last few weeks, largely because Ridley herself is conducting press tours for other projects. Here’s everything the actress has revealed so far.

Daisy Ridley Is Returning To Star Wars Because She Loves The Pitch

“The story is cool as ****”

Ridley had always been open to returning to Star Wars, but she never expected it to be quite so soon. In several interviews, she’s reflected on how she was invited to meet with Kathleen Kennedy, and was blown away by the pitch. Ridley insists the story is “cool as ****,” and she has nothing but praise for director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who she considers inspirational. Obaid-Chinoy gave Ridley a basic rundown of the entire plot, and the unexpected twists drew Ridley back.

“New Jedi Order” Is The Only Title Under Discussion Right Now

A movie title with rich Star Wars history

There have been oddly persisted rumors that Rey’s next Star Wars movie has been retitled “A New Beginning,” but sources from Lucasfilm have insisted those are incorrect. Ridley has agreed, seeming rather bemused at the strange rumors. “New Jedi Order” seems to be a working title rather than the final one, but it’s a term with deep history in Star Wars lore, so would be an appropriate one.

But the script is imminent…

Ridley may have received a high-level overview from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, but that’s about it; Ridley has revealed the next Star Wars movie’s script is yet to be finished. This explains the vagueness of some of her responses – although, naturally, once she has seen a script, she’ll be avoiding giving any spoilers. That said, both Obaid-Chinoy and Ridley herself have indicated the script – written by Stephen Knight of Peaky Blinders fame – is imminent.

Rey Skywalker

Trained by both Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, Rey fought against the First Order as an ally of the Resistance. She ultimately triumphed against Palpatine himself, channelling the full power of all Jedi.

One of Ridley’s most intriguing comments was a sly hint that Rey has gone through some unexpected changes. Reflecting on how she’s in a very different place personally after the sequels, Ridley noted, “And also, in those intervening years from the last film, what has happened and where has that led Rey to?” The clear implication is that Rey hasn’t just become a Jedi Master; she’s been on a journey of personal growth of some kind, and a transformative one at that.

Rey’s New Jedi Order Seem To Follow The Traditional View On Attachment & Relationships

Don’t expect a Rey family

It’s always seemed likely Rey’s New Jedi Order would be very different to the prequels. For one thing, she’s establishing them based on the sacred Jedi texts, which predate many refinements to the Jedi Code. That’s led to intense speculation that Rey’s Jedi Order will allow relationships, taking a very different view on attachment. Ridley herself doesn’t expect this, though, so it’s not part of the high-level pitch. Asked whether Rey would have any children, she neemed nonplussed.

I would say she probably doesn’t have children seeing she’s a Jedi,” she observed. It looks as though viewers hoping for Jedi dynasties and families are doomed to disappointment. To be fair, Lucas’ interpretation of attachment was fundamental to his conception of the Jedi Order, so it would seem strange if Star Wars dropped it altogether.

Daisy Ridley Doesn’t Know Whether Other Sequel Trilogy Stars Are Returning

Will Finn become a Jedi at last?

Finally, Ridley has no idea whether some of the other Star Wars sequel trilogy cast are returning. While Ridley would love to see Finn as a Jedi, she considers that discussion to be above her pay grade. That said, Ridley has teased there will be new characters in the New Jedi Order movie – which means the galaxy will be continuing to expand.
