Every Upcoming Animated Disney Movie

Every Upcoming Animated Disney Movie

Disney has several upcoming animated movies — here’s what the release slate looks like. Disney has found incredible success in live-action properties over the years. With Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, Lucasfilm, and their deals with Sony, Disney has been unstoppable. Several of the highest-grossing properties of all time, such as Star Wars, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avatar, and the X-Men, are owned by Disney now. On top of that, Pixar’s animated franchises like Frozen and Toy Story contribute to Disney’s undying success, with original films like Coco and Soul also receiving critical praise and an impressive performance at the box office.

While the studio hasn’t had a completely spotless streak of critical successes when it comes to animated movies over the last couple of years, Disney still dominates the box office any time one of their films is released. Frozen II smashed box office records like its predecessor, while Spies in Disguise and Onward were met with a lukewarm reception. The COVID-19 pandemic forced all upcoming animated Disney movies to come to a screeching halt and the studio had to rethink its plans. This affected their earnings by a considerable margin but also helped Disney boost the Disney+ streaming service. Soul and Raya and the Last Dragon demonstrated Disney can succeed even through tough circumstances and gave audiences a taste of what Disney and Pixar have for the near future.

From original titles to a surprising prequel, Disney is ready to tackle a new era of filmmaking with several upcoming animated Disney movies. Feature-length sequels to established properties like Frozen and The Incredibles are far on the horizon (Monsters Inc. is got an animated series titled Monsters at Work). However, Disney’s upcoming animated movies also seem very promising. Here is every single upcoming animated Disney movie.

Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers: May 20, 2022

Every Upcoming Animated Disney Movie

Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers is the closest upcoming Disney animated movie, releasing on May 20, 2022. The movie is based on the 90s animated television series of the same name. The Disney animated film stars comedians John Mulaney and Andy Samberg as Chip and Dale respectively, along with other familiar names in undisclosed roles like Will Arnett, Eric Bana, and Keegan-Michael Key. As well, Seth Rogen is a part of the cast as “Bob”, who apparently is a motion-capture Viking dwarf. The story follows the two Rescue Rangers as they try to save one of their team members after moving on with their lives. The upcoming Disney animated movie will be released on Disney’s streaming service (Disney+) as Chip ‘n Dale is considered to be a Disney+ original.

The Bob’s Burgers Movie: May 27, 2022

Bob's Burgers The Movie

Bob’s Burgers: The Movie has been in development since 2017. Its original July 17, 2020 release date was removed from Fox’s release schedule before Disney announced a new April 9, 2021 release. However, this date was later removed. Finally, fans of the television series will get their wish as this upcoming Disney animated movie will release in theaters on May 27th, 2022. In the Bob’s Burgers movie, a sinkhole opens right in front of Bob’s restaurant, essentially ruining business and the family’s summer plans. The celebrated cast of the original animated series will be returning to reprise their roles in the film and audiences can look forward to a lot of laughs with this welcomed addition to the franchise.

Lightyear: June 17, 2022

Buzz Lightyear on a mission

One unexpected installment in the Toy Story franchise is Lightyear, a prequel movie that reveals the in-story inspiration of the Buzz Lightyear toy line. Despite Toy Story 3‘s emotional and seemingly conclusive finale, Toy Story 4 showed that the adventures of Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and their friends were far from over. The fourth installment ended with Woody leaving to forge his own journey. But instead of exploring what challenges Woody may face or what the rest of the toys will do without their cowboy friend, Pixar chose to treat Toy Story fans with the real, flesh-and-bone test pilot who went “to infinity and beyond.”

Tim Allen has voiced Buzz since the first Toy Story installment, but Captain America actor Chris Evans will voice the titular character in the upcoming animated Disney movie — a choice that suggests the prequel will be a more action-packed and superhero-like adventure than the previous movies if Evans’ popularity as the Avengers hero is anything to go by. Based on the latest trailer, Lightyear doesn’t tie into the plot of the Toy Story movies save for the question of how the Buzz Lightyear toyline came to be. It has a theatrical release date of June 17, 2022.

Strange World: November 23, 2022

The upcoming Disney animated movie Strange World will release, most likely in theaters or possibly on Disney+, on November 23rd, 2022. Thus far, Alan Tudyk is the only revealed cast member. Strange World will tell the story of the legendary Clades family. The familial team of explorers goes on an important mission with one another, but their journey becomes complicated when family disputes get in the way. Pixar veteran Don Hall, who directed Big Hero 6 and wrote Moana among other popular works, is set to direct the Disney animated movie. Qui Nguyen, who was a writer on Raya and the Last Dragon, wrote the new film. With these two Pixar alums at the helm, Strange World will undoubtedly be a terrific movie.

Night At The Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again: 2022

Night at the Museum

The Night at the Museum franchise is getting a revival with the upcoming Disney animated movie Night at the Museum: Kamunrha Rises Again. The newest installment will release exclusively on Disney+ and the film is a joint project between Disney and 20th Century Studios. As far as the plot only the very basics are known. The latest Night at the Museum movie will follow Larry’s son, Nick, who tries to fill in his father’s shoes by becoming a night watchman at the museum. Not much else is known other than Kahmunrha will make a return as the film’s villain. Audiences should also be happy to know that many characters from the original Night at the Museum movies will come back for the animated feature, such as Teddy Roosevelt, Octavius, Jedediah, and Sacagawea. This upcoming Disney animated movie will release sometime in 2022 and will be produced by the original franchise director Shawn Levy.

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules: 2022

Disney+ Diary Of A Wimpy Kid Rodrick Rules Animated Movie

Disney+ recently decided to reboot the Diary of a Wimpy Kid franchise with their latest movie of the same name. This upcoming Disney animated movie acts as the sequel to the first. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules doesn’t have a firm release date as of yet but the film is expected to arrive sometime in 2022. Since the first installment followed Jeff Kinney’s book as closely as possible, it’s likely that the sequel will do the same. Based on the plot of the book, Rodrick Rules should see more of Greg Heffley’s older brother as he causes constant trouble within the family. Given that Diary of a Wimpy Kid was released exclusively on Disney+ it’s more than likely Rodrick Rules will do the same.

Untitled Carlos López Estrada Movie: 2023

Carlos López Estrada was mainly responsible for the family-favorite film Raya and the Last Dragon. After the movie’s success, Estrada is given another opportunity to wow audiences with this upcoming Disney animated movie. No plot details nor a title has been released as of yet, but viewers should be waiting with bated breath based on Estrada’s last film. As of now, the director is currently making a live-action version of Robin Hood for Disney+, and there’s no telling whether or not his animated film will receive a theatrical or a streaming release.

Other Upcoming Disney and Pixar Animated Movies

Disney pixar short

Disney and Pixar also have some release dates without a specific project attached to them. There are three upcoming Pixar movies with tentative release dates; however, no details about casts, titles, or the plot have been revealed. This group of upcoming Disney animated movies will release on June 16, 2023, March 1, 2024, and June 14, 2024. While there’s no concrete information as to what these new films could be about there’s been a lot of speculation based on the exciting news that the studio recently reached out in a casting call for a trans girl voice actor. This could mean that there will be an openly trans movie, which would be a first for Disney or Pixar. If this were to be the case a movie of this sort would be a great follow-up to Turning Red, which is exclusively about puberty. Other upcoming Disney movies include a Lion King prequel that focuses on Mufasa and Scar, though this isn’t a Pixar film. The upcoming animated Disney movies that might plan on premiering on these dates could be sequels to beloved titles, but given Disney’s recent focus on original stories, it’s likely that more brand-new titles will keep innovating the world of animation.
