The Umbrella Academy season 3 faces the Sparrow Academy — here is every member of Reginald Hargreeves’ new team explained. The titular characters have faced off against many an adversary, but perhaps none more formidable than the Sparrow Academy, a group of seven super-powered children who were also born on October 1, 1989.
Adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves in an alternate timeline following the Umbrella Academy’s return from 1963, the Sparrow Academy are also unique in that they were born under mysterious circumstances. Frustrated and annoyed with his original choices, Reginald decided to go a completely different route with his picks after meeting the Umbrella Academy in 1963. Unlike the Umbrella Academy, however, the Sparrows have trained well into adulthood, working together in a way the former have yet to quite master because they split up when they were younger. With the same number of members, the Sparrow Academy is strong and proved they could take on the Umbrella Academy — at least for a while before Viktor showed off what he could do.
But who is each member of the Sparrow Academy and what kind of power were they born with? Christopher is especially a mystery, and the team, listed as chronologically labeled by Reginald, have distinct and intriguing powers and personalities that allow them to stand out from the Umbrella Academy.
Marcus Hargreeves/Number One
Marcus is the leader of the Sparrow Academy and, upon meeting him in The Umbrella Academy season 3, it’s easy to see why. He’s confident, always has a plan, and is willing to negotiate if it works best. Marcus is also able to keep the family together, especially when they’re all bickering. They listen to him and he assuredly leads with charisma and logic most of the time, though he does like a good fight. Like Luther, Marcus has super strength and can take out anyone in fights due to his physical prowess. The leader of the Sparrow Academy was also born under mysterious circumstances and season 3 doesn’t detail who his mother is or where he was born.
Ben Hargreeves/Number Two
Ben is in a unique position because he is the only member of the Sparrow Academy who was also a part of the Umbrella Academy. Adopted by Reginald in disparate timelines, Ben was born on a train in Seoul to a teenage mother. The Umbrella Academy season 3 reveals the Sparrow Academy version of Ben has a big ego and is always angry. What’s more, he used to be Number One in Marcus’ place before he was demoted to Number Two by Reginald, who didn’t see him as capable of leading. He spends the majority of season 3 scheming, though. Like the original Ben, the Sparrow Academy’s iteration can also call tentacles from a portal dimension that emerge from his abdomen.
Fei Hargreeves/Number Three
Immediately upon meeting Fei, one can see she is tough. She’s smart and has no qualms about questioning leadership if she thinks there might be a better way to handle any given situation. Fei Hargreeves works with Ben, but has no issue standing up to him and challenging him and his plans. As one of the 43 children born under strange circumstances, Fei has the natural ability to call upon a murder of crows to follow or attack anyone she deems a threat. The crows allow her to see things differently, though not with her eyes, which are heavily scarred and covered with tinted sunglasses. Fei is not to be messed with because she can be quite deadly when someone gets on her bad side.
Alphonso Hargreeves/Number Four
Alphonso is designated Number Four and has quite the sour disposition. His face looks a bit like it’s melting, but that’s only because Alphonso is capable of inflicting physical pain on others by way of his own body. As an example, if someone punches him in the face or stomach, it’s the other person who will recoil in pain. Alphonso’s physical features morph in conjunction with the blows he takes. Beyond his powers, Alphonso enjoys mocking his enemies and he makes jabs at the Umbrella Academy constantly in their fights. Like Marcus and Fei before him, Alphonso’s backstory — including where he was born and to whom — are unknown.
Sloane Hargreeves/Number Five
Sloane is perhaps one of the more empathetic members of the Sparrow Academy. She dreams of leaving her childhood home behind to travel around the world and to simply live a life outside of the one she has. In terms of Sloane’s Sparrow Academy powers and skills, she can manipulate gravity, which allows her to fly and lift others off their feet, throwing them across rooms in battle. Sloane has a big heart and lets people in as she tries to understand them and their plight. She’s one of the only members of the Sparrow Academy who wasn’t entirely reluctant about working with the Umbrella Academy in season 3.
Jayme Hargreeves/Number Six
Jayme (aka, Number Six) is a firecracker, with a hot temper and no time for small talk. She’s also a loner, seemingly closest to Alphonso out of all of her siblings. When it comes to her powers, however, Jayme can cause a lot of damage. Jayme has the ability to shoot venom from her mouth at her enemies. Should the venom make contact (and it usually does because she’s got great aim), the target immediately begins seeing hallucinations. For Diego, this included a dance-off between the Umbrella Academy and the Sparrow Academy set to “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins. As with her siblings, Jayme’s history is unknown beyond her time with the Sparrows.
Christopher Hargreeves/Number Seven
Christopher Hargreeves is perhaps the most intriguing member of the Sparrow Academy. To start with, he’s certainly not human like the rest of his siblings. Rather, Christopher is a telekinetic cube whose origin is still a big mystery. The Umbrella Academy season 3 doesn’t provide any answers regarding Christopher’s history or where he might have come from. Is he another super-powered baby who just happened to transform into a cube? Maybe. Christopher is able to alter the temperature in any room and induce great fear in the minds of his targets. And although he doesn’t speak in English, the Sparrow Academy can still understand him. To that end, Christopher seems to have a good relationship with his siblings and he’s nothing short of loyal to the Sparrows and their cause, taking issue with the Umbrella Academy because of their perceived threat against his siblings.
