Every Poppy Playtime Monster, Ranked By Scare Factor

Every Poppy Playtime Monster, Ranked By Scare Factor

Even though Poppy Playtime‘s villains tend to assume the form of children’s toys, they are unfortunately the furthest thing from playful or comforting in-game, and a few in particular take the cake as the scariest monsters in Playtime Co. Their character designs might not be too creepy at a surface level, but when combined with the dark history behind the company, the atmosphere of the environment, and the situations in which players encounter these beasts, Poppy Playtime‘s monsters quickly become a force to be reckoned with, cementing them as some of the most iconic faces in modern indie horror.

The characters from Chapter 1 and 2 have been scarily good, but Chapter 3‘s new monster might be even better. Although MOB Games has yet to confirm who will take the spotlight, this hasn’t stopped fan theories from circulating the community, and the possibilities for Poppy Playtime‘s next monster are each terrifying in their own right. With the next installment slated for a 2023 release, players won’t have to wait much longer to meet this mysterious figure. But since Poppy Playtime‘s scariest monsters have already left quite an impression, Chapter 3‘s villain has a lot to live up to.

9 Bunzo Bunny Is Barely Scary In Poppy Playtime

Every Poppy Playtime Monster, Ranked By Scare Factor

The least scary monster in Poppy Playtime is Bunzo Bunny, who is encountered during the Musical Memory mini-game in Chapter 2. He is fully capable of jumpscaring and killing the player, and his constant cymbal-crashing can certainly make the experience stressful, but his cheerful appearance ultimately makes him the least intimidating character in Poppy Playtime. With blushing cheeks, button eyes, and teeth that are nowhere near as sharp as the other monsters’, Bunzo Bunny is quite tame in design, and doesn’t match up to his much creepier colleagues in Playtime Co.

8 Mini Huggies Can Swarm The Player Poppy Playtime

In a similar vein, the Mini Huggies (part of Huggy Wuggy’s Project: Playtime Monster kit) are less alarming than they are adorable. Appearing during the Wack-A-Wuggy mini-game in Chapter 2, these tiny versions of Huggy can give players a fright if they aren’t fast enough, but their bite-sized nature inherently makes them less aggressive than the scariest monsters in Poppy Playtime. Plus, being able to actively smack them away can give the player a sense of power over them, which doesn’t help their case much. Their wide, toothy grins do grant them some points in the horror department, though.

7 Poppy Playtime’s Boxy Boo Had Potential

A shot of Boxy Boo's jumpscare from the Project Playtime cinematic trailer.

Boxy Boo is the latest addition to the monster roster, receiving a dramatic introduction alongside the launch of the multiplayer spin-off Project: Playtime, but his design leaves much to be desired. Even though his mouth is full of sharp incisors, and he plays a creepy jack-in-a-box tune, these otherwise promising features are counteracted by his cartoonish eyes, springy limbs, and perfectly cube-shaped head.

Boxy’s reveal was divisive among Poppy Playtime players, who understandably felt that he would be scarier with some slight tweaks. However, his ability to kill a human in the blink of an eye, snatching them up by their head and whisking them into his box before they can even react, makes him quite dangerous as a Poppy Playtime monster.

6 Poppy Playtime Is A Cunning Character

Poppy sat in chair staring wide eyed and terrifyingly into the camera.

The series’ eponymous character, Poppy Playtime, takes on the form of a small, seemingly harmless doll, but her looks are rather deceiving in this regard. Being the first toy ever created at Playtime Co., she’s much wiser and more composed than other monsters, and she makes this apparent when taking advantage of the player at the end of Poppy Playtime Chapter 2. Not much is known about her or her intentions, but it’s clear that her name bears a lot of importance to the company (and its downfall), and that she’s orchestrating something much larger behind the scenes.

5 Kissy Missy May Have Good Intentions In Poppy Playtime

Kissy Missy, who might actually be Stella, a potential Playtime Co. employee, may conversely have her heart in the right place, but she’s still one of Poppy Playtime‘s scariest monsters. She makes a brief cameo in Chapter 2, in which she helps the player by pulling a lever for them. However, it’s clear that she’s more than capable of committing a brutal murder just like her male counterpart, Huggy Wuggy.

Towering over the protagonist and making sure to stare them right in the eyes, Kissy Missy looks to be a bit more thoughtful than the other beasts in the game, but this can be a double-edged sword. Whereas some of the other monsters in Poppy Playtime act almost viscerally, her actions seem intentional and calculated. Intelligence is a dangerous thing for a beast of her capacity to have, especially if she changes her mind about helping the player, a turn that could make Kissy Missy the main monster of Chapter 3.

4 Poppy Playtime’s PJ Pug-A-Pillar Makes For A Terrifying Chase Sequence

Poppy Playtime's PJ Pug-a-Pillar jumping out at the player.

PJ Pug-a-Pillar is accurately described by his name, being a long, blue and purple caterpillar with the face of a pug. In concept, he’s a rather silly Poppy Playtime monster; his design combines two relatively harmless creatures, his voice (heard on cardboard cut-outs) makes him sound like a comedic relief character at best, and his tongue is perpetually sticking out of his smiling mouth.

However, his chase sequence in Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 makes PJ Pug-a-Pillar a truly nightmarish sight to behold. As the player attempts to grapple across the obstacle course, he will be right on their tail the entire time – his unsettling gaze not once leaving the player, watching and waiting for the slightest mistake. When the lights go dark, they’ll have to watch PJ Pug-a-Pillar slowly slink towards them, listening to the sounds of his many feet against the floor as they’re helpless to react.

3 Mommy Long Legs Is An Unpredictable Monster In Poppy Playtime

Although Mommy Long Legs can’t compete with Huggy Wuggy, she is still one of Poppy Playtime‘s best monsters. Like Kissy Missy, she’s quite intelligent and selective with her hostility, being protective of the children who fell victim to Playtime Co.’s cruel practices, and thus doing anything in her power to stop employees (such as the protagonist).

Those who don’t fall under the umbrella of Mommy Long Legs’ motherly instincts are met with a manipulative, unpredictable killer, whose grasp is near impossible to escape due to her stretchy, elastic limbs: a truth that players learn the hard way at the end of Poppy Playtime Chapter 2.

2 Poppy Playtime’s Huggy Wuggy Is Unnerving

First-person screenshot from Poppy Playtime, with Huggy Wuggy standing over the player, smiling with a blank stare from the shadows.

Huggy Wuggy is the face of Poppy Playtime, and it’s not without good reason. Though his lanky stature and his fuzzy blue composition aren’t exactly terrifying on their own, it’s his strange, undecipherable behavior that makes him so unnerving, and likely part of the reason why schools issued warnings against Poppy Playtime‘s Huggy Wuggy, as well.

The first time players encounter him in Chapter 1, he’s standing completely motionless in the entrance to Playtime Co., pretending to be a statue. But within the next few minutes, he’ll be chasing them through the vents at an unnatural speed without so much as a single word or sound – only a big smile, armed with hundreds of glistening teeth. Whereas Mommy Long Legs makes her intentions known (albeit passive-aggressively), there’s no way of knowing what’s in Huggy Wuggy’s mind, and this erratic nature can effectively instill tension and paranoia in players.

1 The Prototype Is Poppy Playtime’s Scariest Monster

The Prototype's claw dragging Mommy Long Leg's corpse into a boarded off hallway in Poppy Playtime.

As iconic as Huggy Wuggy may be, Poppy Playtime‘s scariest monster is the Prototype, otherwise known as Experiment-1006. The only glimpse that players receive of this clawed creature is at the end of Chapter 2, when he drags Mommy Long Legs’ corpse into the recesses of a dimly-lit hallway. Not much is known about who Poppy Playtime‘s Prototype really is, but this is precisely why he’s so terrifying; he’s clearly a step ahead and a threat to the same monsters that players can barely escape, but his form – and the true extent of his power – remain worryingly unclear in Poppy Playtime.
