This past year, Pokémon GO Tour: Kanto, proved to be one of the mobile game’s best events in its history. On Saturday, February 26th, 2022, it follows up with an event focused on the Johto region. Pokémon GO Tour: Johto will feature Pocket Monsters that debuted in the second generation, with each of them having the possibility of being shiny.
Though some Pokémon have had shiny variations in the game for some time, others will be making their introductions by or during the anticipated event. While some shinies are less exciting than others, many trainers are likely to hunt tirelessly for them all.
Girafarig
Girafarig, one of the most underrated Pokémon from the Johto region, has been a relatively rare spawn since its introduction into Pokémon GO. After the conclusion of Pokémon GO Tour: Johto, it is likely to remain rare, so trainers interested in completing a shiny Pokédex will want to seek this one out during the event.
Aside from the pink portions becoming a vibrant blue, the rest of the shiny variation is only a subtle change from the original, with the yellow color turning slightly more orange and the dark brown lightening a bit.
Hoppip/Skiploom/Jumpluff
Hoppip has been a fairly common spawn for years, and the introduction of its shiny variation will give players more reasons to click on and catch it. All three stages of this evolutionary line have excellent shinies. Hoppip turns from its usual pink o a light green that almost matches the color of its leaves, which in turn become a slightly lighter green.
Skiploom turns its green coloration into a light purple/dark pink and desaturates the color of the flower on its head. Finally, the usually blue part of Jumpluff’s body becomes pink, as do its cotton puffs, though these are less saturated than the central part of Jumpluff’s body.
Slugma/Magcargo
Slugma is an often forgotten Pokémon, but the shiny variations for it and its evolution, Magcargo, are some of the better ones debuting during Pokémon GO Tour: Johto. Slugma trades in its red/orange coloring for light grey, and Magcargo’s main body becomes a light purple, carrying a shell that is a brown/orange color.
Many consider Magcargo to be one of the coolest Fire-type Pokémon, and its incredible shiny form is sure to make trainers excited to find Slugma during the Johto event.
Corsola
Shiny Corsola was supposed to debut in Pokémon GO in July 2021 for the Pokémon Air Adventures event, but this was indefinitely postponed.
Because Corsola is a region exclusive, it will be appearing in raids during the Johto event, limiting the number that most players will see, but giving trainers who cannot usually find one the opportunity to fill out their Pokédex and potentially find a shiny. The standard light pink of Corsola changes to a light blue, creating a dramatic variation.
Remoraid/Octillery
The pure Water-type Pokémon Remoraid and Octillery are uncommon spawns in GO, but they will likely appear frequently during the Johto event, making this the perfect opportunity to obtain a shiny.
The light blue/silver color of Remoraid becomes a partly saturated purple color. Octillery’s deep red body becomes a brownish yellow color, making both shiny variations of the Remoraid line fascinatingly different from their originals. They are not some of the stronger Pokémon in the game, but the inclusion of their excellent shinies will make them much more desirable.
Hoothoot/Noctowl
Though they may not often be considered some of the coolest regional bird Pokémon, Hoothoot and its evolution, Noctowl, are welcome additions to the list of soon-to-be-shiny-eligible Pocket Monsters in Pokémon GO. They have been in the game for such a long time that it is surprising they have not received shiny variations already, and many trainers are eager to obtain one.
Both stages of the family will be colored gold, with Hoothoot’s being more saturated than its evolution’s. Hoothoot’s leg becomes a light pink color, and Noctowl’s wings become a lighter brown color than they usually are. The difference between the original and shiny variations is dramatic, so trainers should be excited to see one.
Phanpy/Donphan
Phanpy is a player-favorite Generation II Pokémon that, unfortunately, is not one of the better options in the GO meta. However, fans of the adorable Pocket Monster will be happy to have the opportunity to catch a shiny one during Pokémon GO Tour: Johto.
Phanpy’s shiny variation does not undergo much of a change, with its colors only being desaturated; but its evolution, Donphan, has much more dramatic differences. The grey-blue of its body becomes more of an orange-brown, and the red under its ears becomes magenta. Donphan is not as popular as its pre-evolution, but its fantastic shiny form is a welcome feature of the event.
Mantine
The lovable manta ray-like creature, Mantine, will finally receive a shiny form during the upcoming event. The change is not dramatic, but it is an appealing variation. The grey underside becomes a light desaturated blue, and the dark blue top of the Pocket Monster becomes a slightly lighter, but still darker than the underside, blue.
Though this Pokémon will appear during the Johto event, Mantine’s pre-evolution, Mantyke, debuted in Generation IV in the Sinnoh region, so, unfortunately, one of the cutest fish Pokémon is not likely to make an appearance as a shiny until later.
Tyrogue/Hitmontop
Tyrogue and Hitmontop both debuted in Generation II, but Tyrogue’s two other evolutions, Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee, are from Generation I and had their shiny variations added during Pokémon GO Tour: Kanto in 2021. With the upcoming Johto event, Tyrogue and Hitmontop will receive theirs.
Tyrogue’s pink/purple elements become dark grey, and the brown portions that resemble shorts and shoes become blue. Hitmontop’s brown elements become light grey, and its blue features become light purple. Fans will be excited to complete the shiny collection of the family with three different evolutionary options, especially because all of its members have shinies that are very different from the original designs.
