Every New Movie Release Date Delay This Week

Every New Movie Release Date Delay This Week

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, production companies keep delaying the release of key movies in order to retain their theatrical release and ensure commercial success – and now, again, several movie release dates have been pushed back. Some have tried to adapt through streaming: in 2020, Warner Bros. announced its plan to release its 2021 slate in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously. Disney released its live action version of Mulan and Pixar’s Soul on Disney+ as well.

These delays carry on in 2021 as large amounts of movie theaters remain closed. Even though there are now vaccines for COVID-19, their slow distribution likely means that these closures will continue to affect the moviegoing experience, and, therefore, the release of upcoming movies.

In the week of January 18 alone, Sony pushed back a significant portion of its projects, as did Universal. Disney also pushed back several 20th Century Studios projects that it acquired in its purchase of Fox. Here are all of the movies pushed back this week, as well as their new release dates.

Nobody – April 2, 2021

Every New Movie Release Date Delay This Week

This Bob Odenkirk-led thriller has already been rescheduled once, from August 2020 to February 2021. Written by David Kolstad, creator and writer of the John Wick franchise, Nobody follows a family man whose simmering rage comes to a boil as he seeks vengeance for a home intrusion.

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway – June 11, 2021

Just one of many comedies delayed due to the pandemic, Peter Rabbit 2 continues the adventures of James Corden’s title rabbit. In this sequel to the 2018 hit, Peter ventures outside his garden, and his family seeks to bring him back. The film also stars Daisy Ridley, Domhnall Gleeson, and Margot Robbie.

Cinderella – July 16, 2021

Sony’s musical live-action adaptation of the classic Cinderella fairy tale seeks to set itself apart with its casting of pop star Camila Cabello as the lead. Written and directed by Blockers director Kay Cannon, the film also stars Broadway legends Billy Porter and Idina Menzel as the Fairy Godmother and Evil Stepmother, respectively. Cinderella was previously scheduled for February 5.

BIOS – August 13, 2021

Cast Away meets sci fi in BIOS, which was previously scheduled for an April 2021 release. The film stars Tom Hanks as the last man on earth who builds an android to help protect his dog. Directed by Miguel Sapochnik, most well known for his work on Game of Thrones, BIOS also stars Caleb Landry Jones, Samira Wiley, Laura Harrier, and Skeet Ulrich.

The King’s Man – August 20

The King's Man

The prequel to the popular Kingsman franchise, The King’s Man depicts the early days of the Kingsman agency and will release on August 20, 2021. Ralph Fiennes stars as the Duke of Oxford, the movie’s main agent bent on saving the world from tyranny all while mentoring his own protégé. The film features an all-star cast including Gemma Arterton, Rhys Ifans, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, plus it promises to feature the same blend of action and humor that made the first two Kingsman films successes. It was originally scheduled to release in November 2019 but has been pushed back a number of times.

No Time To Die – October 8, 2021

No Time to Die Poster Keeps November Release Featured

The 25th installment in the James Bond franchise, and Daniel Craig’s last time in the role, has been pushed back once again, so audiences will have to wait a little longer to witness more iconic James Bond action sequences and gadgetry. No Time To Die picks up after James Bond’s retirement of five years. Soon, he is thrust back into the world of espionage to face off against a new adversary (Rami Malek). In his return to the field, he also meets MI6’s new 007, played by Lashana Lynch.

Last Night In Soho – October 22, 2021

Ellie looking terrified in Last Night in Soho

Director Edgar Wright’s psychological horror film about a fashion student in London has been pushed back to October 2021, as Wright stressed the need for the movie to be seen in theaters. The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Thomasin McKenzie, and Matt Smith. While not much is known about the film, Last Night In Soho promises to be quite different from Wright’s previous films like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Shaun of The Dead, which have tended towards the comedic.

Ron’s Gone Wrong – October 22, 2021

The first film from new animation studio Locksmith Animation, Ron’s Gone Wrong is about an 11-year-old boy whose robot best friend does not function completely as he is supposed to. This will be the only Locksmith film distributed by 20th Century Studios under Disney, as Locksmith formed a deal with Warner Bros. when Disney acquired Fox.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife – November 11, 2021

Ghostbusters: Afterlife

A new generation carries on the legacy of the Ghostbusters in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which follows a single mother (Carrie Coon) and her two children (Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard) as they move to a new town and discover their connection to the Ghostbusters. Paul Rudd joins them as a local teacher who has been documenting paranormal activity around the town. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts reprise their original roles from the first two Ghostbusters movies.

Morbius – January 21, 2022

Jared Leto Morbius

Jared Leto stars as the titular role in Morbius, in which a doctor’s attempts to cure his rare blood disease results in him gaining strange, vampiric powers. The film promises to blend sci fi and horror and is part of Sony’s Spider-Man villain universe, which includes the Venom films. While Morbius’ release date has been pushed back, Venom‘s sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, continues to hold its June 25, 2021 release date.

Uncharted – February 11, 2022

Tom Holland Uncharted

Based on the hit video game series of the same name, Uncharted stars Tom Holland as treasure hunter Nathan Drake. The action adventure movie has been in development since the 2000s and has seen several changes in writers and directors. Its release has been delayed several times as well, making the shift to 2022 the latest in a series of delays. Hopefully this delay will be the film’s last and audiences finally get to see a young Nathan Drake in action in 2022.

Bob’s Burgers: The Movie – Unknown

The Belcher family standing together in Bob's Burgers

Disney has pulled Bob’s Burgers: The Movie from its release schedule. The animated musical comedy, based on the beloved show running on Fox, follows the adventures of the Belcher family – Bob, Linda, Tina, Gene, and Louise – as they navigate running their burger restaurant and their own lives. If the film does not get a theatrical release, it’s possible it could find space on a streaming service such as Disney+ or Hulu, where the show is currently streaming.
