Every Major Jedi In The Star Wars Skywalker Saga, Ranked From Weakest To Strongest

The Star Wars Skywalker Saga features many powerful Jedi characters, but not all are equally strong in the Force. Training to become a Jedi is a demanding challenge, requiring commitment, mental discipline, and letting go of everything one knows about the universe. Not every Jedi in the Star Wars movies and TV shows was willing to make this sacrifice to the same degree, while others were more naturally attuned to the Force. Some characters also had little time to prove themselves onscreen, resulting in other Jedi having more evidence to prove their strength.

A Jedi must also have inner strength to match their physical abilities, giving some characters an advantage in representing what it means to be a Jedi. Even so, noble qualities do not necessarily guarantee power, which is often necessary for Jedi to save the galaxy from those who follow the dark side. The Skywalker Saga includes nine significant Jedi, ranked based on natural ability, personal conviction, and defining acts that influenced the fate of the Star Wars galaxy.

How To Watch Star Wars Movies In Order

Here is how to watch all Star Wars movies and TV shows chronologically and in order of release, and how each fits into the Star Wars timeline.

9 Leia Organa

Rebel turned Jedi turned general

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker revealed that Leia was strong enough to beat Luke Skywalker on the last night of her training, but she chose to surrender her lightsaber and turn away from the Jedi path. Star Wars: The Force Awakens showed how she could sense the people she cared about across the galaxy, while Star Wars: The Last Jedi had her survive in the vacuum of space by using the Force to pull herself back to her ship. While these are impressive feats, Leia is the weakest Jedi in the Skywalker Saga because she has had fewer opportunities to showcase her abilities in the movies.

8 Qui-Gon Jinn

One with the Living Force

Qui-Gon Jinn also had limited time to show his strength onscreen, but he still left quite an impression. He was an expert in lightsaber combat, understood the Living Force like no one else, and embodied what it truly meant to be a Jedi. Most importantly, Qui-Gon always did what he thought was right, even if it meant defying the Jedi Council and going against the Jedi Code. Qui-Gon was not quite as strong as his Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and he was killed by Darth Maul on Naboo. However, Qui-Gon discovered the path to immortality after becoming one with the Force.

7 Mace Windu

The leader of the Jedi Order

Mace Windu was considered one of the most powerful Jedi in the order, and this was proven several times throughout the prequel trilogy. He was a master of the brutal lightsaber combat Form VII, also known as Vaapad, and he was one of its few practitioners who was strong enough not to fall to the dark side. Mace survived against a legion of battle droids at the Battle of Geonosis, decapitated Jango Fett, and even defeated Darth Sidious when three other Jedi Masters were killed. If not for Anakin Skywalker’s betrayal in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, he may have ended the Sith “once and for all.”

6 Obi-Wan “Ben” Kenobi

More powerful than you can possibly imagine

Anakin telling Padmé Amidala that Obi-Wan was “as powerful as Master Windu” was no exaggeration. Obi-Wan defeated Darth Maul in single combat after Qui-Gon was killed, survived multiple encounters with Jango Fett, and defeated General Grievous at the end of the Clone Wars. He bested his fallen apprentice when Anakin became too overconfident in their duel on Mustafar, the only Jedi who could have survived against his former Padawan. Darth Vader may have killed Obi-Wan in A New Hope, but he died knowing he would become one with the Force as Qui-Gon had.

5 Ben Solo

The last of the Skywalker bloodline

Ben Solo not only inherited his family’s connection to the Force, he formed a Force dyad with Rey, making him even more powerful. However, the movies only offered a few scenes of Ben as a Jedi, including his flashback in The Last Jedi and his return to the light in The Rise of Skywalker. Once he became a Jedi again, he demonstrated expert swordsmanship by defeating the Knights of Ren, then sacrificed himself to save Rey. He may have only been a Jedi for a short time onscreen, but Ben showed incredible strength and embodied the best of the Jedi at the end.

4 Luke Skywalker

The embodiment of a true Jedi

While he did not start as naturally strong as other members of the Skywalker bloodline, Luke grew into one of the greatest Jedi who ever lived. By Return of the Jedi, he had mastered several Force abilities and could stand toe-to-toe with Darth Vader, but unlike his father, Luke resisted the temptation of the dark side. Obi-Wan told Darth Maul that those who could oppose the dark side were more powerful than the Sith would ever be, and no one demonstrated this principle better than Luke. Even after years in exile, Luke could project his image across the galaxy and fool Kylo Ren long enough for the Resistance to survive.

3 Rey

“Darkness rises, and light to meet it.”

Few Jedi could have matched Rey’s raw power in the Skywalker saga, as she was the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine and formed a Force dyad with Kylo Ren. Rey was naturally gifted in the Force, learning new skills quickly compared to most and defeating Kylo Ren the first time she wielded a lightsaber. This power overwhelmed Rey and nearly pushed her to the dark side, but her commitment to the Jedi illustrated great inner strength. By the end of the sequel trilogy, Rey had connected with the spirits of the past Jedi, making her even stronger than before.

2 Anakin Skywalker

The Chosen One who brought balance to the Force

The only character more naturally gifted than Rey was Anakin, the Chosen One destined to bring balance to the Force. Unlike Rey, Anakin spent over a decade training as a Jedi, making him an expert with a lightsaber and affording him greater control over the Force. Although Anakin fell to the dark side and spent years under Palpatine’s control, he still returned to the light and saved his son. Anakin then became a Force Ghost alongside Obi-Wan and Yoda, eventually guiding Rey to bring back the balance as he did.

1 Yoda

The Grand Master of the Jedi Order

Luke told Din Djarin how “talent without training is nothing,” and no living Jedi had more experience than Yoda. His 900 years of life provided him with great wisdom and plenty of time to master the Force in ways that few Jedi could in their shorter lifetime. Yoda could redirect or absorb Sith lightning, fight with incredible agility, and even summon lightning as a Force Ghost. No one could beat Yoda or surprise him in the movies, and no Jedi understood the Force as well as he did. Yoda earned his title as Grand Master of the Jedi Order and is easily the strongest Jedi in the Star Wars Skywalker Saga.
