Every Jay & Silent Bob Movie In Chronological Order

Every Jay & Silent Bob Movie In Chronological Order

Jay and Silent Bob have been on many wild adventures over the years, but what is the correct chronological order for their movies? Writer/director Kevin Smith became an indie sensation thanks to his micro-budget debut Clerks in 1994. This comedy centered around the somewhat aimless lives of convenience store clerks Dante and Randal, and the movie’s quotable dialogue saw it become a word-of-mouth success. It also introduced Jay and Bob, played respectively by Jason Mewes and Smith himself.

Clerks would launch an interconnected series of films called the View Askewniverse, with later entries pulling in actors like Ben Affleck, Rosario Dawson, and Matt Damon. Smith has done plenty of work outside this shared universe, including directing dramas like Jersey Girl to horror movies such as Tusk. He’s helmed episodes of TV shows like Supergirl, written for comics, runs a successful podcast network, and much more.

While Smith once vowed that the characters would be retired following Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back in 2001, the duo has been dusted off several times in the years since. Newcomers to the series may be slightly confused about the exact order of their View Askewniverse appearances, so here’s the chronological order according to the timelines of the films.

This is the definitive order for watching all of the Jay and Silent Bob movies:

  • Mallrats (1995)
  • Clerks (1994)
  • Chasing Amy (1997)
  • Dogma (1999)
  • Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)
  • Clerks II (2006)
  • Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019)
  • Clerks III (2022)

While the Jay and Silent Bob movie timeline is mostly in line with the order the movies were produced, Smith has stated Mallrats is set one day before the events of Clerks, which introduced the pair. They also featured in the animated adventure Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie!, and when added to the overall timeline of the View Askewniverse, things get muddy. While it was released in 2013 – between Clerks II and Jay And Silent Bob Reboot – it’s an adaptation of a Bluntman and Chronic comic tie-in from 2001.

This comic in itself is depicted as being the one created by Ben Affleck’s Holden and Jason Lee’s Bankey in 1997’s Chasing Amy. Additionally, there have been numerous other Jay and Silent Bob movie and TV appearances outside Smith’s fictional cinematic universe, including making cameos in 2000’s Scream 3, Canadian drama Degrassi: The Next Generation, The Flash, and various music videos, such as Afroman’s “Because I Got High,” which featured on the soundtrack for Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

The release of Clerks III in 2022 marked yet another return for Smith and Mewes’ characters. The threequel centers on convenience store clerk Randal deciding to make a movie about his life and job after a heart attack puts his life in perspective. Where Randal and Dante appear, Jay and Silent Bob aren’t far behind, and the pair feature as their same old selves helping to get the epic production made. As Randal tells Dante “Jay and Silent Bob are like C-3PO and R2-D2… they’ve been with the franchise so long, they still give them cameos and put them on the lunchboxes.” It’s even possible that the View Askewniverse movie Clerks III won’t be the last time Jay and Silent Bob appear, as they could very well return for the long-brewing Twilight of the Mallrats.
