Every Gold Saucer Date Scene, Ranked Best To Worst

Every Gold Saucer Date Scene, Ranked Best To Worst

Players can see one of five date scenes during Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth‘s second Gold Saucer sequence, but some are much more romantic than others. Which date scene a player sees is entirely dependent on their affinity with all their party members. Whomever they have the closest relationship with is automatically chosen for the date in Chapter 12. Affinity can be built in a number of ways: choosing the correct dialogue options, playing some of FF7 Rebirth‘s minigames together, completing certain side quests, or even wearing matching swimsuits during the Costa del Sol chapter.

Each date sequence has its pros and cons, especially depending on the player’s side in FF7‘s love triangle, but some of them just slot better into the overall arc of the plot. Some date scenes are truly revealing, providing memorable character development or showing a different side of a beloved ally. Some date scenes are just satisfying to achieve, requiring a complex series of obscure choices that may not be obvious at first glance. Others are none of the above. Here are all six FF7 Rebirth date scenes, ranked from best to worst.

FF7 Rebirth Review: “A Beautiful Showcase Of A Timeless Story”

FF7 Rebirth is an exceptional return to the world of Gaia that leans heavily into its star-studded memorable cast and a classic-but-reimagined story,

1 Aerith’s Date Scene Is The Best In FF7 Rebirth

Aerith’s Gold Saucer Date Makes Sense With FF7 Rebirth’s Story

Of all FF7 Rebirth‘s Gold Saucer companions, Aerith’s date scene just makes the most sense in the wider context of the story. Given everything Aerith contributes to the compilation of FF7, her central role in the entire conflict, and the revelations about her at the end of FF7 Rebirth, sending Cloud on a date with her sets up the rest of the game beautifully. An Aerith-Cloud romance is teased from the very beginning of FF7 Remake – they even have a uniquely Midgar meet-cute.

Aerith preempts the rest of the gang in asking Cloud out, suggesting almost as soon as they arrive at the Gold Saucer that the two ride the Skywheel together. On the ride, Aerith encourages Cloud to sit next to her, but Cloud declines and sits on the other side. However, Aerith is frightened by the simulated Galactic Saviors show outside, and cozies up to the cold-hearted merc. Overwhelmed by the beauty of the fireworks, Aerith directly addresses her difficulties in getting closer to Cloud. Cloud fails to acknowledge this verbally, but instead allows Aerith to rest her head on his shoulder.

Many of the central conflicts in FF7 Rebirth are on display here: Cloud’s continued aloofness, his identity crisis, and Aerith’s attempts to get through to him. It’s an excellent moment of character development for both of them, as Aerith lets go of Zack and Cloud lets his guard down, if only for a moment. With all these things in mind, FF7 Rebirth‘s Aerith date scene makes the rest of the game much more emotionally fraught.

2 Tifa’s Date Scene Is The Second-Best In FF7 Rebirth

Tifa and Cloud make up the other side of FF7 Rebirth‘s love triangle, and they have one thing he and Aerith don’t: history. Having grown up together in Nibelheim, the two of them come from similar backgrounds and know many of the same people – although their fractured memories call this into question. Cloud and Tifa are also teased as a couple throughout FF7 Rebirth, especially in the prologue when he rescues her from Sephiroth’s rampage. Cloud and Tifa make perfect sense together, even if this scene isn’t as satisfying in the context of the game’s final acts.

Does Tifa Die In FF7 Rebirth?

The possibility of Tifa’s death in FF7 Rebirth has been in discussion ever since the game’s announcement. Now, we have a definitive answer.

Cloud and Tifa’s is also the most explicitly romantic date scene in FF7 Rebirth. During their Skywheel ride, Cloud and Tifa discuss their past and their struggles to remember it. It ends with Tifa commenting that this is the closest she and Cloud have ever been, before wondering if she’s misinterpreting Cloud’s feelings. In the intimate ending, Cloud reaches out a hand and tells her, “Not one bit,” a surprisingly sweet departure from his usual pragmatism. Tifa takes it, and the two embrace as literal fireworks go off in the background. They kiss as the music crescendos.

3 Barret’s Date Scene Shows Touching Character Growth

FF7 Rebirth’s Barret Has A Heart-To-Heart With Cloud

Barret and Cloud have an antagonistic relationship at first, but soften on each other over the course of FF7 Rebirth. Barret first mistrusts Cloud as a former SOLDIER and agent of Shinra. Ever sassy, Cloud’s nonchalant dismissal of Barret’s mission only worsens their relationship. However, after proving their usefulness to one another and suffering Sephiroth’s anger together, the two forge a cautiously friendly working relationship. That’s what makes Barret’s date scene the best of the platonic choices: there’s a great bit of character development on display here, as Cloud and Barret talk as equals for the first time.

On the Skywheel, Barret takes the opportunity to lecture Cloud on the finer points of love. The ensuing scene is pretty funny, if a little sad: this is the game’s way of chiding the player for “failing” to raise their affinity with one of the more romantic date partners. Barret briefly shows the softer side he usually reserves for his daughter Marlene. He waxes poetic about his youth in the mines, and his coming-of-age through love. He even makes an amusing little pun about FF7 Rebirth‘s Chocobo Racing minigame, which he calls “in-kweh-dible.”

4 Cid, Vincent, & Cait Sith’s Date Scene Is Hard To Achieve

A Fun Treat For FF7 Rebirth Replayers

Cid, Vincent, and Cait Sith’s date scene is easiest to achieve in chapter replays after beating the main story of FF7 Rebirth. The three of them don’t have affinity trackers, and even if they did, it wouldn’t matter: players only see this date scene if their affinity with all the other eligible candidates is equal. It’s not the most exciting, as everyone acts like their usual selves: Vincent is moody, Cid is rowdy, and Cait Sith is silly. There’s no intimate ending to this one. It always concludes with Cait Sith making a joke, then getting upset when nobody laughs.

The Cid, Vincent, and Cait Sith date scene is perfectly fine. It’s just not all that interesting, and doesn’t do anything for any of the characters who feature in it. However, it’s a nice goal for repeat players to set for themselves, as it offers something different from all the other options.

5 Red XIII’s Date Scene Is Sweet, But Simple

Taking FF7 Rebirth’s Best Boy For A Walk

Red XIII pants on the Gold Saucer cable car in a screenshot from FF7 Rebirth's date scene.

Red XIII’s Gold Saucer date scene probably contains the least dialogue of any available option. He simply acts as expected of a dog: he howls at the chocobos, tries to catch the Frisbee-shaped Galactic Saviors ships, and drools on the Skywheel seats. Red then gets candid about his visions of the future, and asks Cloud to keep Aerith safe. It’s a funny scene with a sweet ending, but it’s far from Red XIII’s most emotionally impactful moment in FF7 Rebirth.

6 FF7 Rebirth’s Yuffie Date Scene Is Pointless & A Little Weird

Unrequited Love At The Gold Saucer

Yuffie shrugs on the Gold Saucer cable car in a screenshot from FF7 Rebirth's date scenes.

Yuffie’s Gold Saucer date scene doesn’t do her any favors: she starts off as spunky and energetic as ever. She teases Cloud about Tifa’s crush on him, before reminiscing about her own crush on Zack. As per usual, she laments being looked down on as the youngest member of the party. Cloud remains silent almost throughout the entire scene. Finally, Yuffie gives him a kiss on the cheek, and he gasps in surprise. Yuffie immediately goes on the defensive, swearing that she was just “practicing” and that it doesn’t betray anything about her true feelings.

It’s implied to be unrequited, and definitely unsolicited, but the age gap between Cloud and Yuffie leaves a bad taste in the player’s mouth. This scene doesn’t provide new information or further development for any character, either. It doesn’t really go anywhere or change anything about the plot, so if there’s one Gold Saucer date worth skipping, it’s Yuffie’s.

Ultimately, the choice of date scenes comes down to personal preference – and playstyle. While some players may choose to influence outcomes in order to woo their preferred partner, others may just play through the game naturally and see who they get. Some may see it as a fun little filler episode where they can get to know their teammates, and others may consider it a crucial turning point for character development. No matter what, though, the Gold Saucer date scene is an iconic part of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth New Poster-2

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Remake and will see Cloud and his friends set off beyond the walls of Midgar to explore the world, stop Sephiroth’s machinations, and see the world outside their slum prison. Now that the whispers of fate no longer guide the characters along the pre-destined path set in the original PlayStation classic Final Fantasy 7, the heroes (and villains) will shape the future. The game will still visit prominent locales and revisit crucial story points, but it will be a more significant departure from the first game from the source material.
