Every Game For The Rumored May 2024 PlayStation State Of Play

Every Game For The Rumored May 2024 PlayStation State Of Play

Rumors have begun to circulate around a PlayStation State of Play event next month, with many high-profile titles potentially appearing. While many companies held off until June to fill the void left behind by E3, Sony had previously held its major PlayStation Showcase in May 2023, where it gave players their first look at Marvel’s Spider-Man 2‘s gameplay, Bungie’s new game Marathon, and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, the remake of the beloved 2004 stealth title, so it’s possible that the company will follow this pattern again in 2024.

The rumors of a PlayStation State of Play or Showcase in May stemmed from the Giant Bombcast podcast when Jeff Grubb – who has been accurate with Sony events in the past – speculated that the Silent Hill 2 remake could be featured there. From there, several others have speculated what other highly anticipated titles could be shown based on games that are known to be in development, with Pyo listing several of them out on X.

Silent Hill 2 Remake

A PlayStation Showcase Could Confirm The Game’s Release Date

Grubb’s comments about a PlayStation event came about when Giant Bomb was discussing the ESRB rating for Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 remake on the podcast. It was previously announced that the title would be released sometime in 2024, but with the ESRB now rating the game “M-for-Mature“, it’s a strong indication that the title is ready and will be released earlier in the year.

A PlayStation event would be a good place to confirm a final release date. It would also be good to show some more gameplay to redeem the Silent Hill 2 remake after the previous, more action-centric trailer had fans of the iconic survival horror title worrying that the remake missed the point of the original with its gut-wrenching story about grief, guilt, and abuse and was instead being turned into another generic horror-shooter. Bloober Team’s CEO Piotr Babieno commented on the trailer, stating “It’s not the spirit of what used to be, or what we’re creating now“, pointing out that Konami was in charge of marketing, and has therefore done a poor job of representing the final product.

Ghost Of Tsushima 2

Sucker Punch’s Long-Awaited Sequel Has Yet To Be Officially Announced

Sucker Punch’s samurai epic, Ghost of Tsushima, was one of the best games of 2020, telling the story of Jin Sakai, a Samurai struggling to honor his family’s legacy while protecting Tsushima Island from the Mongolian forces that deployed more devious tactics during their invasion, ultimately becoming the legendary Ghost of Tsushima to do so. The title had two distinct endings, and while there is some concern that Sucker Punch may have to choose one to make canon and potentially disappoint many players who chose the others, many have been eager to continue Jin’s story in a sequel.

While it has yet to be officially announced, many job listings over the years have all but confirmed Sucker Punch is working on a Ghost of Tsushima sequel. With the first game coming to PC this May, announcing its sequel as a PlayStation showcase that same month would certainly be a good way to drum up further interest in the series, encouraging more players to dive back into the first game in anticipation of its sequel.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater

New Gameplay Could Be Shown At PlayStation’s Event

A remake of Hideo Kojima’s beloved stealth title Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater was announced at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase with a short cinematic teaser showing Snake in a jungle environment. Konami also showed new gameplay footage at the Xbox Partner Preview on October 25, 2023, as the game is due for a multi-platform release. Unfortunately, this served more as a showcase of environments and how visually impressive the game looked and included very little actual stealth gameplay.

With the title scheduled to release in 2024, it’s likely that Sony will show more from it in a similar event this year, potentially showing more of the features players have come to expect from a Metal Gear Solid title. The original voice actor for Solid Snake, David Hayter, revealed that he’d had the opportunity to play Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater‘s introduction sequence up to the bridge scene, and called it “spectacular“, so it’s possible this could be the footage shown at the PlayStation Showcase, or players could be treated to a new trailer showing off more of the environments and story they know from the original.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 DLC Or Expansions

A Beetle DLC Storyline Was Leaked Earlier This Year

With Marvel’s Spider-Man 2‘s gameplay footage essentially headlining the PlayStation Showcase in May 2023, Insomniac’s superhero sequel could likely return for one next month. The first Marvel’s Spider-Man‘s The City That Never Sleeps DLC chapters set up Yuri Watanabe’s transformation from a police captain to the vigilante Wraith, with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 teasing a further continuation of her story as she tracks down cult leader Cletus Kasady, who was last seen escaping with the Carnage symbiote, setting up an even more dangerous threat.

In a surprise twist, when Marvel’s Spider-Man 2‘s 1.002 update launched early last month, bringing highly-requested features such as New Game Plus to the title, players got more than they expected, as they could access the title’s development menu, unlocking settings for items, enemies, and health. This has since been patched out, but not before players uncovered the entirety of the “Beetle Villain Arc, suggesting that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2‘s DLC will be centered around the villain, Beetle. A PlayStation showcase would be a good place to confirm this, potentially showing Insomniac’s take on the character in action along with any new suits for Peter Parker and Miles Morales that could accompany this new story content.

Bend Studio’s New Multiplayer IP

Very Little Is Known About The Studio’s Upcoming Multiplayer Title

After Sony turned down the idea of a sequel to Bend Studio’s open-world zombie title, Days Gone, despite the title amassing a solid fanbase through its inclusion in the PlayStation Plus Collection until May 9, 2023, and ending on a cliffhanger, the studio confirmed it was working on a new open-world multiplayer IP. Very little official information has been shared since, but recent job listings for the studio on the PlayStation website have sought out those with experience in AAA live-service games.

Responding to a fan inquiring about the new IP on X in January 2024, the official Bend Studio account simply stated “We cooking“. It’s likely that as one of Sony’s first-party studios, the team is holding off on any official announcement or reveal outside of a major PlayStation event, so it’s possible that this title may be unveiled during the rumored May 2024 showcase.

More First-Party Content Has Been Teased

Could The PlayStation 5 Pro Finally Be Unveiled?

The last thing Pyo mentioned in their list was “more first-party stuff“. While this is extremely vague, it’s possible that Sony could finally reveal its long-rumored PlayStation 5 Pro. Sony recently confirmed that it was entering the latter half of the PlayStation 5 generation, and a smaller mid-generation refresh of the console with more storage and a detachable disc-drive was released toward the end of 2023, three years after the console’s original launch.

Since then, various specs for a PS5 Pro model have been banded around, with some elements sounding almost too good to be true, such as Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling, and rendering 45% faster than the base PlayStation 5, with up to four times as much ray tracing. Other specs left some players disappointed, with the rumored CPU being virtually the same as the base PlayStation 5, leading them to wonder how titles such as the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 5 would run at over 60FPS on it. A PlayStation Showcase would certainly be an obvious place to reveal such a console and to clarify some of its enhancements and new features in response to the various rumors.
