Every FF7 Rebirth Mount, Ranked By How Cool It Is

Though FF7 is known as the game that popularized perhaps the most widely-known Final Fantasy mount, the Chocobo, FF7 Rebirth actually has multiple modes of traversal in the expansive open-world RPG. In addition to a wide array of different Chocobo types that are obtainable — including flying Chocobos — there are also other modern vehicles people can obtain throughout the game.

Unlike the original Final Fantasy 7, Rebirth boasts a huge, explorable open-world map, spanning from the wide-open Grasslands to the dusty regions of Cosmo Canyon. The opportunity to capture the first Chocobo will occur in the Grasslands Region in Chapter 2 of the game and will be the common yellow Chocobo first introduced in Final Fantasy 2 back in 1988. As one progresses, however, many variations will become available, including some non-Chocobo modes of transport.

Chocobo (Chapter 2)

Grasslands Region Normal Chocobo

The Grasslands Chocobo is the first one caught in the game and is the classic yellow Chocobo those who have played Final Fantasy have gotten to know over the years. This is the first introduction to Chocobos in the game and starts at the Chocobo Ranch by talking to Billy. Eventually, this initiates the minigame that involves sneaking around a herd of Chocobos to get close enough to capture Piko. This will be a recurring mini-objective in FF7 Rebirth with more advanced Chocobos later in the game.

Wheelie (Chapter 6)

A Segway For City Travel

Cloud rides a Segway along a beachfront boardwalk in what's likely Costa del Sol's apperance in FF7 Rebirth.

There are actually a few different colored Wheelies in FF7 Rebirth as part of a quest in Costa del Sol called “Wheelie Rendezvous.” Characters simply have to talk to the Wheelie associate to begin a quest to transport unreturned wheelies to their dropoff stations for a reward of two Companion Cards. However, outside of moving slightly faster (not unlike the contraption in real life), using a Wheelie for actual traversal across the open world is probably one of the worst options.

Corel Chocobo (Chapter 7)

Corel Region Chocobo

Rather than catching the orange Chocobo found in the Corel Region of the game, people can purchase a Rent-a-Bird Membership for 300 gil. Players must visit the Rent-a-Bird Stables in Costa del Sol to obtain the orange Corel Chocobo. This Chocobo isn’t anything special, other than its fun orange feathers and the fact it doesn’t require the completion of a minigame to obtain.

6
Mountain Chocobo (Black)

Junon Chocobo Region Chocobo

Cloud rides a black chocobo up the side of a mountain in a screenshot from an FF7 Rebirth trailer.

The Junon Mountain Chocobo does exactly as its name implies and can scale mountains and vertical cliff edges. Southeast of Under Junon in an abandoned Chocobo Ranch, characters can pick this quest up by heading to the ranch and picking up the “Stuck in a Rut” quest, which entails completing a short minigame that involves sneaking (much like the Grasslands Chocobo) to wrangle it. Unlocking this Chocobo is required to explore the Junon region fully, so it is a must-capture.

5
Jungle Chocobo (Chapter 9)

Gongaga Region Chocobo

Jungle Chocobo being pet by Cissnei in FF7 Rebirth.

Besides its cool green color, the unique thing that sets Jungle Chocobo apart is they can jump off of the mushrooms around the Gongaga Jungle Region of the map, enabling quick traversal around the more mountainous and craggy areas. Obtainable via the Chapter 9 quest, “The Planet Stirs,” outside of the Gongaga Region, the mount isn’t unlike other variations of the bird; it still stands out as one of the cooler types in the game.

4
Sky Chocobo (Chapter 10)

Cosmo Canyon Region Chocobo

This teal-colored Chocobo stands apart from its counterparts in one supercritical way — it’s capable of flight. The Cosmo Canyon flying Chocobo can ride air currents around Cosmo Canyon to complete the Glide de Chocobo training mini-quests found throughout Cosmo Canyon. To get the Sky Chocobo, players must visit Kamaria’s Ranch and complete the quest, “Bonds of Trust,” which, like other Chocobos, requires a character to do a stealth mission to capture the teal-colored creature.

3
Tiny Bronco (Chapter 13)

Cid’s Speedboat & Plane

Cid's Tiny Bronco boat and plane in FF7 Rebirth.

The Tiny Bronco is an advanced boat and plane hybrid owned by Cid and can be found at the Costa Port in Costa del Soul. This super-fast red speed boat almost hovers over the ground as it zips around the Meridian Ocean. Used as part of the beginning of Chapter 13, “Where Angels Fear to Tread,” Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret, and the rest of the crew need to use the boat to ride over the ocean and reach the Pirate King’s Grotto cache location for the rest of the quest. Later, it is revealed it can also fly in the air.

Nibel Chocobo (Chapter 11)

Ocean Chocobo

This Chocobo’s blue feathers lend themselves well to the aquatic FF7 Rebirth bird. As demonstrated by AuraZX on YouTube, the ocean Chocobo is capable of wading through bodies of water, the Nibel’s Ocean Chocobos use the chocojet ability to launch themselves high up in the air while mounted in the water. This is arguably an even better flight than Cosmo Canyon Region Chocobos can provide, and it comes with its own cool animation of the Ocean Chocobo shooting jets out of its bottom.

1
Buggy (Chapter 8)

An Eight Wheel ATV

The Buggy automatically unlocks through the main story while in the Corel Region at the end of Chapter 8 and is a great help in dealing with the rugged and rocky terrain there. After an intense battle with one of FF7 Rebirth‘s bosses, Dio arrives with the red-colored Buggy and will gift Cloud and the crew the vehicle to use. The Buggy is not only a super-effective mode of transport for the party but also a pretty cool-looking vehicle, serving both form and function in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
