As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the nation, much of the film industry is reacting by delaying production and premieres. In many cases, release dates have been postponed to later in the year or next year—and in some cases indefinitely. Multiple horror and thriller flicks have been victim to this scenario.
Some studios are responding to this crisis by releasing movies via online streaming services, as with Onward, Emma, and The Invisible Man. Most studios are waiting to release their films until movie theaters can safely open up again. Variety reported that Lionsgate, for one, stated that dates and strategies for bringing films to the public will be announced “once there is more clarity on when theaters will safely and fully resume operations.” On a related note, AMC Theaters won’t be opening up until there are new releases to offer.
Viewers will continue to wait for word on when the many highly anticipated horror movies that were slated for 2020 will actually be released. In the meantime, they can watch trailers and read synopses of the upcoming flicks.
The Woman In The Window
20th Century Studios’ The Woman In The Window, a mystery thriller directed by Joe Wright and starring Amy Adams, was supposed to come out on May 15. The May release was postponed, and no new release date has been set. The movie, based on the 2018 novel of the same name by pseudonymous author A.J. Finn, centers on an agoraphobic psychologist who befriends a neighbor across the street from her New York City apartment, only to witness her disappearance.
Spiral: From The Book Of Saw
Lionsgate’s Spiral: From The Book Of Saw, the ninth installment of the Saw franchise starring Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson, was also originally slated for May 15, but has been indefinitely postponed. The movie, directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, follows two detectives as they investigate horrific murders reminiscent of Jigsaw, only to become trapped in the killer’s game themselves.
A Quiet Place Part II
Paramount Pictures’ A Quiet Place Part II, directed by John Krasinski and starring Emily Blunt, pushed its opening date of March 20 to sometime in September 2020. The sequel, set in a post-apocalyptic world in which noise is equal to death, picks up where the first one left off, with the Abbott family fighting for survival and becoming aware of new fears. Paramount’s Spell, starring Omari Hardwick, has also indefinitely postponed its release date, which was originally set for August.
Candyman
Universal’s Candyman, directed by Nia DaCosta and produced by Jordan Peele, has moved its release date from June 12 to September 25, 2020. The movie is a reboot of the 1992 original of the same name. It stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Anthony, a man who is exposed to the terrifying true story of the Candyman.
Antlers
Antlers, a supernatural horror film directed by Scott Cooper, was originally set for an April 17 release, but has postponed that date indefinitely. The independent movie, which stars Keri Russell, Jesse Plemons, and Jeremy T. Thomas and was produced by Guillermo del Toro, follows a schoolteacher and her police officer brother in who suspect that a student is concealing a supernatural creature.
Run
Lionsgate’s Run, directed by Aneesh Chaganty and starring Sarah Paulson, postponed its May 8 release date indefinitely. The movie centers on a disabled, home-schooled teenager who begins to suspect that her mother is keeping a horrible secret from her.
Antebellum
Lionsgate’s Antebellum, directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz and produced by Sean McKittrick—one of the producers of Get Out and Us—was scheduled to be released on April 24, but has postponed that date indefinitely. The movie stars Janelle Monáe as a successful author who finds herself trapped in a nightmarish reality.
The New Mutants
20th Century Studios’ The New Mutants, directed by Josh Boone, had its April 3 release date postponed indefinitely. The movie—the first X-Men horror film—was supposed to be the first of a trilogy, but Boone has said that is now unlikely to happen due to Disney’s Marvel Studios gaining control of the characters.
Last Night In Soho
Edgar Wright’s psycho-horror-thriller Last Night in Soho lost its original September release date as a result of studios reshuffling their slates for 2020. Since other horror movies have been pushed to September, Wright’s film will premiere either later in the fall or might wait until sometime in 2021.
Malignant 
James Wan’s Malignant also had to delay release date in response to the postponement of others. Warner Bros. swapped out Malignant for Wonder Woman 1984 in mid-August, and is still deciding on a new date for Wan’s latest horror flick.
