Even Wolverine’s Claws Can’t Cut 1 Darkly Powerful Marvel Metal

Even Wolverine’s Claws Can’t Cut 1 Darkly Powerful Marvel Metal

In Marvel Comics, the adamantium claws of Wolverine are known to cut through practically any substance they come across. For this and many other reasons, Logan is often referred to as “the best there is at what he does.” Unfortunately, while Wolverine might be the Best There Is, the same can’t be said for adamantium, which is surprisingly ineffective against one unexpected Marvel metal.

X-Force #13 by Benjamin Percy, Viktor Bogdanovic, Matthew Wilson, and Joe Caramagna finds the titular team’s clawed berserker trapped in Hell alongside a mutant warrior named Solemn. The two mutants are both searching for Muramasa Blades, ancient swords with mystical properties. Sharing a cell with his foe, Logan awakens disoriented and ready to escape.

Slicing at the bars of his cell, Wolverine is unable to cut them, with Solem remarking, “Forged with hellfire. Don’t bother.” Eventually, the mutants escape using guile as opposed to brute force, but this brief exchange manages to recontextualize the efficiency of adamantium – especially against the occult.

Adamantium is considered to be one of the most durable metals in the Marvel Universe, giving Wolverine’s claws the sharpness to cut through just about anything on Earth. Unfortunately, Hell-forged weapons don’t originate on Earth, and this added flair of mysticism puts both Wolverine’s claws, and Solem’s adamantium skin, at a fundamental disadvantage against such materials. After all, this is not the only time Wolverine has had to contend with a vulnerability towards hellish materials.

Adamantium’s uselessness against Hell-forged metal makes total sense when considering Logan’s own history with the Muramasa Blade. Hell-forged by one of history’s greatest smiths – Logan’s great teacher, Muramasa – the Blade has long been considered one of Wolverine’s only surefire weaknesses. The Blade is not only capable of cutting through adamantium, but also negating Logan’s healing factor. A killing strike with the Muramasa Blade is a deathblow for Wolverine, and his claws’ inefficiency against the bars in his cell indicates a similar weakness against pretty much anything forged with the metals and fires of Hell.

Adamantium Just Can’t Cut It Against Hellfire

Wolverine’s claws can slice through practically anything in the world, but unfortunately, hellfire weapons aren’t from his world. Against a weapon like the Muramasa Blade, or even simple cell bars in an infernal prison, Logan’s adamantium just doesn’t cut it. The former leader of the X-Men is the Best There Is at what he does, but against the occult alloys of the afterlife, it’s clear that Wolverine’s chances are as dull as his claws.
