Even Vegeta’s Strongest Form Can’t Beat Dragon Ball Super’s New Villain

Warning: Contains a preview for Dragon Ball Super chapter #85

An official preview for Dragon Ball Super chapter 85 shows that even Vegeta‘s strongest form is useless against the series’ most powerful villain, Gas. Fans of the Prince of Saiyans who were excited for Vegeta to get center stage thanks to his amazing Ultra Ego transformation will apparently have to deal with another disappointment.

Dragon Ball Super has taken a habit of sharing official previews of each upcoming chapter a week before they are published. Fans have the chance to take a peek at series artist Toyoyarou’s storyboards and sketches for a few pages, and be teased about how the story will develop. Chapter #85 will focus on Vegeta’s one-on-one fight with Gas, the powerful villain who became the strongest warrior in the universe expressing a wish through the Dragon Balls. Vegeta’s Ultra Ego ability to transform damage taken into power seemed to give him a chance, but the preview shows that this is not the case.

In this preview for chapter #85, shown below with the translation provided by Twitter user @DBSChronicles, Vegeta is happily taking damage from Gas in order to answer with even more strength, but the villain finds a way to counter Ultra Ego, evolving one of Goku’s trademark techniques that he stole in previous chapters. Gas is now able to use Instant Transmission to teleport not himself, but other people, and he is using this new ability to teleport Vegeta around, disorienting the Saiyan and not giving him the chance to react. This is the perfect counter to Ultra Ego, as Vegeta simply does not have the time to find an opening to strike.

Fans of Dragon Ball got really excited when Vegeta debuted his new and most powerful transformation, Ultra Ego. This put the Prince of Saiyans finally on the same level as Goku and even gave him an edge against Gas. Making the user stronger the more damage he takes, Ultra Ego is the best weapon to use against Gas’ overwhelming strength. However, the villain is showing an impressive degree of cunning, as he was able to evolve Goku’s Instant Transmission and use it to counter Ultra Ego. This must come as a disappointment for Vegeta fans, who want to see him shine and outclass his rival Goku.

The official preview page teases that “there is something else going on here that only Goku can sense,” meaning that perhaps the fight between Vegeta and Gas is not as one-sided as these few pages show. Goku and Vegeta have fully accepted their Saiyan legacy in the last chapter, and as a consequence are currently in their best shape. However, there is clearly something still missing before they can beat Gas, and perhaps the upcoming chapter will reveal what Vegeta and Goku will have to do to defeat Dragon Ball Super‘s strongest villain.

Dragon Ball Super Chapter 85 will be released on June 20th, 2022.
