Euphoria Season 3’s Script Issues & Surprising Rue Story Ideas Detailed In New Report

Euphoria season 3 has reportedly undergone significant script issues and surprising story ideas amid continual delays for the show. The successful teen drama first aired in 2019, and attracted controversy for its depiction of drug use, nudity, and sexual content, but received critical praise for its performances, cinematography, and exploration of mature themes, and made stars of several of its ensemble cast. Euphoria season 2’s cliffhanger ending saw Zendaya’s character Rue walk away from girlfriend Jules, boosting anticipation for season 3, and the places it could go in terms of story.

Following several off-set problems and rumors of delays, Euphoria season 3 has now officially postponed production until 2025. One of the factors linked to the delayed production has been script issues, and some surprising story ideas for Rue. According to a report in Variety, Sam Levinson’s original scripts were focused prominently on Angus Cloud’s character Fez, before the actor’s tragic death last year. It is also reported that Zendaya gave “significant input” about where she wanted season 3 to go, including pitching an idea where she would be a pregnancy surrogate.

Will Euphoria Season 3 Happen & What Story Ideas Could It Explore?

Levinson has already teased a five-year time jump, which would put most of the characters in their early to mid 20s. There were plans to relegate Rue to a background character who is working as a private detective, but this was quickly vetoed. Zendaya’s idea of being a sober 20-something surrogate mother will also not happen as the scripts reportedly felt wrong tonally.

One of the big problems facing the future production of Euphoria season 3 is the rising star power of several of its cast members, with Zendaya’s movie career growing in prominence, and Sydney Sweeney’s continued emergence in Hollywood. HBO has freed the entire cast for the duration of 2024, with plans to shoot season 3 in 2025, but this could become problematic if the cast accepts other projects, and scheduling conflicts rear their head.

Whether Euphoria season 3 ever gets made is uncertain at this point, and HBO is certainly taking a risk by delaying production further. If Levinson can come up with rewrites everyone is happy with, and the stars align in terms of production windows and scheduling availability, there is every chance that Euphoria season 3 will happen, but it is also bound to be the final season of the show. For now, viewers will have to make do with revisiting the first two seasons, and cross their fingers that things work out in the next year, and production eventually happens.
