The first trailer for Escape Room 2, subtitled Tournament of Champions, has arrived, teasing the return of the Minos Corporation and their deadly challenges. After surviving the events of the 2019 first film, the story sees survivors Zoey and Ben seeking to bring the evil Minos Corporation to justice but find themselves caught up in a new game alongside others who have survived the shadowy organization’s past tests. Taylor Russell and Logan Miller reprise their roles of Zoey and Ben and lead a cast including Indya Moore, Isabelle Fuhrman, Holland Roden, Thomas Cocquerel, and Carlito Olivero.
Initially directed by Adam Robitel and co-written by Bragi Schut and Maria Melnik, the first Escape Room saw mixed reviews from critics for its thrilling atmosphere and innovative rooms but failure to take advantage of its premise. Despite this, however, the film was a box office smash, grossing over $155 million against its $9 million production budget and getting the sequel green light just a month after its release. Nearly two-and-a-half years after its predecessor’s release and following production and release delays due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the horror sequel is finally coming to theaters this July.
After offering a series of first-look photos at the film earlier this week, Sony has unveiled the first full trailer for Escape Room 2, offering viewers a look at the horror sequel. In addition to the return of the survivors of the 2019 original, the new trailer shows the first glimpse of the bigger and deadlier new challenges the central group will have to face in the upcoming film. Given the first film’s intriguing cliffhanger ending, a sequel was not only inevitable but also very much desired given its teases of one of the wildest traps the film or the Saw franchise could ever put to film. The new trailer indeed points to several exciting new puzzles for its titular players, namely its Entrapment-like chess match. The trailer’s only fundamental flaw is spoilers of who won’t be making it out alive by the end of the film.
Where the first film’s trailer did spoil the demise of one character, the sequel seems to confirm the death of at least three different players. But even with these fates revealed far too early, there’s no denying that Escape Room 2 seems to hold a lot of promise for fans of the first film and expand the world for potential follow-ups. For now, fans will have to wait and see when Tournament of Champions hits theaters in two months.
