The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’s release date has been officially announced by developer Daedalic Entertainment, and it shouldn’t be long before players take control of the accursed creature. The title was announced in 2019 with a planned 2021 release date, but was delayed twice – the second being an indefinite delay. The game’s production happened mainly during the lockdown measures taken against the COVID-19 pandemic, which may have impacted its development.
Now, the uncertainty revolving around its release has been lifted. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is set to be released on May 25, 2023 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, according to a press release from the developer. This means that players will be able to pick up the game roughly two months from the release date’s announcement.
LOTR: Gollum’s Release Date Is Sooner Than Expected
Considering how the game’s updates went silent after The Lord of the Rings: Gollum‘s delay back in July 2022, it is quite surprising that not only did it get a set release date, but that it is so near. As mentioned before, there is only a two-month period between the release date announcement and the actual launch. This means that the title must be nearing its printing and shipping phase – also known as going gold – if it has not already reached that status. Nonetheless, LOTR: Gollum’s release date is positive news for a game that has gone through a seemingly turbulent development process.
LOTR: Gollum Nintendo Switch Release Still Planned For 2023
Daedalic Entertainment also announced that the Nintendo Switch version of the game is due later this year. The company did not, however, specify a release date or even a window. The lack of even a release window for the Nintendo Switch version of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, on the other hand, does not seem so positive. In fact, without a date or window, it seems somewhat likely that it could be pushed into 2024.
Although the general release date for LOTR: Gollum is good news, players should be wary of it. In May 2022, Daedalic announced a release date of September 2022, only to see it delayed indefinitely after two months. A new delay is not completely out of consideration, though the developer has less time to postpone it this time around. Hopefully, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will follow through on its new release date, allowing players to explore Tolkien’s Middle-earth sooner rather than later.
