2018’s The Favourite has become a Netflix hit. The movie, which adapted the true story of two cousins who competed for the affections of Queen Anne in 18th century England, was directed by The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer‘s Yorgos Lanthimos and went on to be nominated for 10 Oscars including Best Picture, winning Best Lead Actress for star Olivia Colman. Stone, who received a Supporting Actress nod for The Favourite, reteamed with Lanthimos for the new Frankensteinian dramedy Poor Things, which has been nominated for 11 Oscars including a Lead Actress nod.

Netflix has now calculated their Top 10 most-watched English-language movies for the week of January 22 through January 28. The historical comedy The Favourite has joined the list at No. 5 thanks to 4.3 million viewers amassing a total of 8.7 million viewing hours. This has allowed the movie to rank higher than other Netflix hits such as the 2023 smash The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the animated Adam Sandler title Leo.

Will Emma Stone Win the Oscar This Year?

While Emma Stone didn’t end up winning for her role in The Favourite, she had already won an Oscar for starring in 2016’s La La Land before taking on her role in the 2019 Best Picture nominee. Considering the fact that her last collaboration with Lanthimos did not bear fruit, it remains to be seen if Emma Stone will win her next Oscar for Poor Things. It doesn’t help that the star is up against strong competition this year.

The 2024 Oscar nominations for Best Lead Actress also include Annette Bening for Nyad, Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon, Sandra Hüller for Anatomy of a Fall, and Carey Mulligan for Maestro. All four movies are prominent titles that have been nominated for many other prizes throughout awards season. However, Emma Stone is strongly in consideration, especially because of the precedent set by the fact that she has already won a Critics Choice Award and a Golden Globe for the role.

Even if she doesn’t win, it seems likely that even more Emma Stone movies will be nominated for Oscars in the future. Her track record is strong, as in addition to Poor Things, La La Land, and The Favourite, her previous projects The Help, Birdman, and Cruella have likewise been nominated for various Oscars. Her role as producer on Poor Things also affords her a second nomination this year, showcasing how she may expand her awards eligibility on future projects.
