Emma Frost’s New Weapon Fulfills Marvel’s Promise of an Iron Man-Style Upgrade

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Invincible Iron Man #15 and X-Men #32

When it comes to the X-Men, there are few mutants as formidable and as dangerous as the one and only Emma Frost. As a world-class telepath with diamond skin, there’s very little that can actually hurt the Hellfire Club’s White Queen, but fans know that Emma loves to accessorize. And with her marriage to Tony Stark allowing her access to all sorts of new tech, Emma is finally getting some Iron Man gear of her own.

In The Invincible Iron Man #15 by Gerry Duggan, Creees Lee, Walden Wong, Bryan Valenza, and Joe Caramagna, the Avenger finally gifts his bride with some Stark tech of her own. Iron Man tells Emma, “I saw you on a magazine cover with something similar, so I made you a weapon.” Tony then presents her with a pair of knuckle-dusters that incorporate repulsor tech.

Powerful enough to destroy a Stark Sentinel, Frost puts her gift to use in this issue and in X-Men #32 by Duggan, Phil Noto, and Clayton Cowles. And with this one gesture, Marvel finally pays off months of teasing fans.

Emma Frost’s New Accessories Are Nothing Less Than Fabulous

Since Emma began appearing regularly in the pages of The Invincible Iron Man, the idea that she’d get her own Iron Man armor has been teased repeatedly both in-story and via the series’ covers themselves. With her own diamond skin and telepathic prowess, some fans may argue that giving Emma Frost armor would be superfluous. Apparently, Iron Man himself would agree, explaining the more subtle knuckle-dusters that are themselves a reference to a fan-favorite cover as the magazine to which Tony refers is actually Russel Dauterman’s famous cover for Marauders #25.

References aside, it’s true that Frost is incredibly formidable without any technological upgrades, but these powers do have their drawbacks. While in diamond form, Emma’s telepathy is hampered, dramatically increasing her durability, and making her effective in a close-quarters combat scenario but limiting her long-range offensive capabilities. This new repulsor tech solves that problem elegantly while giving the X-Men icon the firepower to disintegrate her enemies and look astonishing doing it.

Iron Man and Emma Frost’s marriage may have been one of convenience, but it’s certainly paid off for both parties. Not only has Tony been able to create his most powerful armor ever using Mysterium, but now the White Queen has some new toys of her own to play with. Whether these Hellfire dusters become a staple for the X-Men figurehead, Emma Frost will always be nothing less than fabulous, with or without Iron Man’s tech.
