It’s Camille that decides, in the middle of her wedding to Gabriel, in front of everyone, to mention the pact she made with Emily that neither of them would ever date him. That turned out to be only the first twist of a finale that’s appropriately titled “Charade.”
Camille goes on to say that everyone knows Emily and Gabriel have feelings for each other, which have been there since they met. She storms off, which leaves Gabriel alone at the altar and Alfie feeling like he’s been Emily’s second choice all along. But the real revelation arrives once Gabriel explains that Camille only proposed because she’s pregnant, confirming the emotional messiness will continue. In an interview with EW, Star discusses the eventful ending and what it means for the four characters who seem to be involved in quite a tricky situation:
Let’s start at the very end, and poor Alfie. When did you know things were going to pan out this way and what does it mean for him going forward?
DARREN STAR: I think it’s something that we thought about and we kind of worked backwards from this bombshell. And I don’t think it means Alfie is out of the picture. I think Alfie is already very much embedded in the lives of these characters and work and everything like that. So the question moving forward is, how so? He works with Gabriel, he worked with Emily, but it’s definitely going to be a lot more fraught next season.
Maybe he will get a new love interest?
STAR: Very possibly.
And what about Emily? Does this reveal with Camille mean we’ll be seeing her as a stepmom down the line?
STAR: I don’t know. I don’t think this implies that Gabriel and Emily are suddenly gonna race into each other’s arms. I think it’s an obstacle. And I think there’s a lot of messy business between them that would need to be resolved before they honestly entered into a relationship. I think there’s a lot that Gabriel found out about very quickly about the nature of this pact that she made with Camille, and this idea of feeling manipulated by these two women may not sit well with him.
Is Emily in Paris Season 4 Happening?
For those worried that the show will end on a cliffhanger, given Netflix’s unpredictability with cancelations, there is good news. Emily in Paris was given a renewal for both season 3 and season 4, which provides a large degree of safety regarding the show’s future but also speaks to the streaming service’s faith in the dramedy. It brings in a strong female viewership, ranks in Netflix’s global charts, and has gone viral, as social media has enjoyed poking some fun at Emily’s characterization while also playfully monitoring the show’s fashion and depiction of life abroad.
Whether Emily in Paris season 3 could be the prelude to a final goodbye or there might be more to the story, Star says in the interview that he doesn’t necessarily have one big ending in mind. Instead, he thinks that there are always new opportunities for the ensemble. Stressing that he is not looking toward a series finale, at least for the moment, Star previews that the dramedy will incorporate Eurovision in its next outing.
Star, of course, is no stranger to finding the fun personal turmoil from a charismatic cast. His credits include creating the original 90210, Melrose Place, and Sex and the City. In that sense, the busy and monumental Emily in Paris season 3 farewell could only be the beginning of the protagonist’s troubles. It’ll depend, likely, on if the show continues to perform well for Netflix in the coming weeks and months.
