Elden Ring’s Director Wanted Trailer To Reward Summer Game Fest Viewers

Director of Elden Ring Hidetaka Miyazaki carefully chose Summer Game Fest as the place to debut the re-reveal of the highly-anticipated RPG. Summer Game Fest host Geoff Keighley noted that Miyazaki’s choice was a class-act move to elevate the rest of the industry and any other titles that were revealed prior to the Elden Ring trailer at the end of the show.

Elden Ring was revealed in 2019 at Miyazaki’s next game, but one key element really got people hyped: it would be worked on in collaboration with Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin. That said, after 2019, news about the game went dark. Many believed that Elden Ring was canceled, but as proven today, that’s not the case and the game is actually coming very soon.

Geoff Keighley took to Twitter to give a little behind-the-scenes info on how the trailer got debuted at Summer Game Fest and noted that Miyazaki was very keen on having it portrayed in a specific way. Miyazaki wanted to “reward” fans for watching the entire event and also used people’s expected anticipation to highlight other games and presentations throughout the show, ensuring people would stick around until the end. Miyazaki’s plan worked as it had been rumored that the trailer for Elden Ring would be at Summer Game Fest, so many tuned in to see if it would finally happen.

Summer Game Fest had a lot of great content, from new developer announcements to big, exciting game reveals from studios of all sizes. It’s easy for someone like Miyazaki to want to have all eyes on them, but the legendary director and the team at FromSoftware clearly weren’t interested in that, despite still being the big takeaway from the show. As for when fans will get to hear more about Elden Ring remains to be seen, but with a relatively imminent release date, it’s likely there will be a lot more noise from FromSoftware in the coming months.

The Elden Ring trailer definitely gave fans what they’ve been waiting for with gameplay and real concrete details about what exactly the game is. Although there are still many unanswered questions, fans won’t have to wait long as the game releases next January. It’s definitely classy of Miyazaki to want to use the hype around his own game to boost the work of others and certainly highlights just how much unity there is in a pretty competitive industry.

Elden Ring will release on January 21, 2022.
