Edge of Tomorrow 2 Could Be Doug Liman’s Next Movie

Edge of Tomorrow 2 Could Be Doug Liman’s Next Movie

Director Doug Liman hints that Live Die Repeat and Repeat, the in-development sequel to his Edge of Tomorrow, could be the next film he makes. The original movie was one of 2014’s most pleasant surprises, offering a fun sci-fi twist on the time loop formula. With strong performances from Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, Edge of Tomorrow earned widespread critical praise, but struggled at the box office due to Warner Bros.’ unconvincing marketing campaign. However, Edge of Tomorrow has earned quite the following in the years since its release, and it’s that passion that got the followup off the ground.

Live Die Repeat and Repeat recently saw its script completed, which makes scheduling the next hurdle to clear. All of the principal players have been busy on their own separate projects lately, but now it seems like everything’s about to line up. According to Liman himself, there’s a good chance Edge of Tomorrow 2 is right around the corner.

Speaking to Collider while at the 2018 TCA’s, Liman said, “it has the possibility of being my next film.” He also offered an update on the sequel’s progress, mentioning it’s a story he’s passionate about:

“We’re just working on the script… [We’re no longer working on scheduling issues], now it’s down to we have a window where we could go do it, and we’re frantically working on the script. It’s one of those movies that we’ll only go make if we love the script. It’s not one of those things where the studio is pushing us to make it and they don’t really care if it’s good or not. If the movie happens, it will be because Emily Blunt, Tom Cruise and myself are passionate about making it, which is a great place to be. She doesn’t need this movie, he doesn’t need this movie, and I don’t need it. We’re gonna make it if we really believe in it. We have story that the three of us love, so we’re working hard on the script.”

Edge of Tomorrow 2 Could Be Doug Liman’s Next Movie

Back in October, Liman seemingly confirmed a script for Live Die Repeat and Repeat was in place, but it apparently isn’t finalized. It’s likely the creative team has a sound story in mind and is fine-tuning the screenplay to get it up to snuff. The first Edge of Tomorrow was noted for its cleverness and wit, so it’ll be important for the sequel to follow suit. From the sound of things, this will be quite a packed narrative, aiming to make sense of the original’s ambiguous ending, give Cruise’s William Cage a better arc, and introduce a third main character to the proceedings. With all of those moving parts, it’s better for Liman and company to take their time and make sure they’ve got something that can match up to its predecessor.

It’ll be interesting to see when filming can finally begin. Liman is in the midst of post-production on Chaos Walking, which is due in theaters next year. Cruise will be returning to the skies shortly for Top Gun: Maverick (debuting July 2019) and is reportedly in talks for a role in Quentin Tarantino’s 1969 film. Blunt has the clearest schedule of the main three, already completing A Quiet Place and Mary Poppins Returns with nothing else planned right now. With Top Gun 2 aiming to start production later this year, it’s plausible Liman and crew will have to wait to make Live Die Repeat and Repeat in 2019 for a 2020 release, but nothing official has been confirmed yet.
