Echo Star Confirms Filming Wrap on Hawkeye Spinoff With a New BTS Photo

Echo star Alaqua Cox confirms that filming has wrapped on the upcoming MCU show, sharing a photo from behind the scenes to celebrate the occasion. Spinning off from Hawkeye, the upcoming series will see Cox reprising her role as Maya Lopez / Echo. The story takes place after the events of Hawkeye, as Maya returns to her hometown and works to come to terms with her past. She will also reconnect with her Native American roots, embracing her family and community.

Developed by head writer Marion Dayre, and with a supporting cast that includes Zahn McClarnon, Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Cody Lightning, Graham Greene, and Reservation Dogs star Devery Jacobs, in addition to reported appearances by Charlie Cox as Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin, Echo has garnered a lot of attention since it was first announced in March of last year. Now, with the series set to premiere in mid-2023 as part of Phase Five of the MCU, Cox has shared a major update about the status of the spinoff.

On her Instagram Stories, Cox confirmed that Echo has wrapped filming. The actress reposted a photo from behind the scenes of the Marvel project, which began shooting in late April, alongside a heartfelt text exchange with her father. In the texts, Cox shares with her dad that filming has concluded on Echo, and it’s clear to see how much that means to the performer. Check out the photos below.

Cox’s performance as Maya was singled out as one of the bright spots of Hawkeye, with the actress receiving praise for embodying a complex character in her debut role. Lopez has a rich and important history in the comics as one of the few deaf characters and, since her first appearances in the early 2000s and beyond, fans have wondered what it would be like to see the character in live-action.

Echo will soon allow for the opportunity to expand on her character, continuing the trend of Marvel projects that are not only diverse but honestly endeavor to tell specific stories about specific communities. That much is evident in the show’s synopsis, which keeps the show’s plot and action under wraps while nonetheless offering a clear view of the themes and ideas that viewers can expect when they tune in for Maya’s standalone adventure. It’s one of the positives of the Disney+ MCU series, which have allowed space for the kind of narratives that would inevitably be truncated on the big screen.
