Dynamite Variants Prove Every Comic Cover Is Better With Dogs On It

This October, some of Dynamite Entertainment’s most popular titles will have adorable variant covers featuring dogs. This tail-wagging worth cover art will be created by Tony Fleecs and Trish Forstner, the creative team behind Image Comics’ Stray Dogs, a series billed as Silence of the Lambs meets Lady and the Tramp. These canines will be added to the covers of Red Sonja #2Army of Darkness: 1979 #2, and Vampirella #25.

Stray Dogs is no stranger to crossovers when it comes to variant covers. The comic has numerous variant covers parodying horror movies suiting the tone of the series, lovingly created by Fleecs and Forstner. Some of the highlights include Silence of the LambsScreamPet Sematary, The Thing, and Annabelle. This is even more fitting given the fact that Stray Dogs was picked up by Gary Dauberman, a producer who is part of Paramount Animation who previously penned scripts for the It movies and worked on films from The Conjuring universe.

The website Flicking Myth revealed the adorable variant covers Dynamite Entertainment will be releasing this October. All three can be seen below. Red Sonja #2 is part of the new ongoing series by Mirka Andolfo of Sweet Paprika fame and Giuseppe Cafaro with Sonja recovering from injuries. Army of Darkness: 1979 #2 by Rodney Barnes and Tom Garcia finds Ash in the 70s up against gangs inspired by zombies and vampires. Lastly, the variant cover for Vampirella #25 is one of many as the issue celebrates the wedding of Vampirella and Dracula. This issue also marks the finale of the series by Christopher Priest and Ergun Gunduz.

Comic books are no strangers to variant covers. All of these series from Dynamite already have other variants available. However, those variants don’t have dogs. These covers by Fleecs and Forstner cleverly crossover comic content from both Dynamite and Image Comics in an adorable way that may help introduce new readers to the Stray Dogs universe as well as encourage dog lovers to try out Red Sonja, Army of Darkness: 1979, and Vampirella if they haven’t already.

Dynamite Entertainment will be releasing all of these variant covers in October, so readers can enjoy some cutesiness this Halloween with a touch of creepy. Stray Dogs will also be continuing with a two-issue spin-off series starting in December, Stray Dogs: Dog Days. It will feature a series of short stories featuring, you guessed it, even more adorable dogs.
