HBO Max’s Dune spinoff series titled Dune: The Sisterhood, will have the first two episodes directed by the director for Chernobyl, Johan Renck. The series was originally slated to be directed by Denis Villeneuve, the director of the most recent feature film based on Frank Herbert novels. Villeneuve is still attached as an executive producer on the series along with Renck and Diane Ademu-John (Empire), the writer and showrunner for the series.
Now Deadline reveals that at least the first two episodes of the Dune spinoff series, which acts as a prequel to the films ,will be directed by Renck. Dune: The Sisterhood will take place 10,000 years before the rise of Paul Atreides, and follows the Harkonnen Sisters and the creation of the pseudo-religious organization known as the Bene Gesserit. The series entails that the Harkonnen Sisters will be placed in a tenuous situation, tasked with figuring out how to save the future of humankind that is being threatened.
Brian Herbert, who wrote the Legends of Dune prequel trilogy which takes place during the same timeline as Dune: The Sisterhood, is also executive producing. It is yet to be seen whether his source material will be diligently followed, or whether new mythos will be added to the world. What viewers can look forward to is a series with great potential not only due to powerhouses such as Villeneuve, Renck, and Ademu-John behind the scenes, but also the chance to see how the elusive, focused, and cunning Bene Gesserit rises to power.
