Dune 3 Return As Duncan Idaho Addressed by Jason Momoa

Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho may be returning for Dune: Part Three. Idaho first appeared in Dune (2021), which was directed by Denis Villeneuve, who returned to direct Dune: Part Two. Duncan was a warrior who served Duke Leto of House Atreides and became a close friend and ally to the House’s heir, Paul Atreides. After the Emperor turned on Leto and his family, Duncan fought to the death to protect Paul and his mother.

While Duncan died during Dune‘s tragic ending, Jason Momoa may soon be returning to the franchise. During an interview with Men’s Health, Momoa hinted that he will have a role to play in the future of Dune. He refused to share too much since he worried that he would get in trouble with the Dune producers, but he did say that he hopes to get back into the third movie. Check out his full quote below:

It’ll be a good future now if Duncan Idaho may have some sort of … You know what we did have? Oh man, I can’t actually say this. I’ll get in trouble. F*ck. Well, there was something that was really cool that went into the movie that didn’t make the first one, and it was pretty epic… I’ll try to get it back. I’ll try to get it back in the third one.

How Can Duncan Idaho Return For Dune: Part Three?

Duncan Idaho’s death was made explicit in Dune (2021). He stays behind, while Paul and his mother escape, and he elects to subject himself to a final stand against the mighty forces of the Sardaukar. While he kills many, he is eventually overwhelmed by their forces. Any hope of rescuing Duncan is erased, as Paul flees to join the Fremen. The tragic last stand allowed him to cement himself as a loyal soldier for House Atreides, but it meant that Momoa’s role in the franchise was over.

Why Dune 2 Was Right To Cut Paul & Chani’s Child (It Would’ve Made The Best Book Change Impossible)

Although cutting off Paul and Chani’s child from Dune: Part Two is a major creative decision, it makes sense because of how it benefits the movie.

In Frank Herbert’s books, however, Duncan Idaho’s role does not end in the original Dune. While he could not join Dune: Part Two‘s cast, Duncan is meant to return in Dune Messiah, which will form the bulk of Dune: Part Three‘s plot. Duncan is brought back to life as a ghola, a clone of a deceased individual. The ghola possesses all the memories of their previous lives, but those memories are difficult to regain and can take time and a specialized method to develop.

Duncan is not likely to regain his lost memories immediately, but he will still play a significant role in the story. Dune: Part Two has already made massive changes, but Duncan’s part in Dune Messiah is essential, and his influence on Paul’s decisions is different to replace. If he does return, Jason Momoa will be happy to return for whatever part Dune: Part Three wants Duncan to play.
