Dumb Money Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Dumb Money.

Craig Gillespie’s comedy-drama film Dumb Money is based on the true story of the GameStop short squeeze of January 2021 and effectively uses its soundtrack to add to its humor. Dumb Money is now streaming, bringing new audiences to the film after it unfortunately flopped in theaters last year. Despite Dumb Money’s positive reviews, it only made $8 million at the box office. Luckily, viewers can revisit Dumb Money and discover the surprisingly funny and entertaining true story of the short squeeze.

The Dumb Money cast is led by Paul Dano as Keith Gill, a financial analyst who shares his opinions on the stock market through Reddit and YouTube live streams under the name “Roaring Kitty.” Keith decides to save the failing GameStop stock and encourages others to do the same, including a nurse named Jenny (America Ferrera) and GameStop retail employee Marcos (Anthony Ramos). When enough people start investing, it has disastrous consequences for several hedge fund investors, like Gabe Plotkin (Seth Rogen) who had been shorting the stock, assuming it would fail.

“WAP” by Cardi B – “WAP” by Cardi B is the first song that plays in Dumb Money, setting the tone for the film. It plays as Gabe Plotkin realizes how much money he’s about to lose from GameStop. He runs around his mansion, juxtaposed by Keith running on a local track.

What Happened To Gabe Plotkin After Dumb Money

Gabe Plotkin and his company Melvin Capital play a pivotal role in Dumb Money. However, the real Gabe Plotkin’s story didn’t end with GameStop.

“21” by Darko – The song “21” by Darko plays briefly in Dumb Money as an introduction to Marcos, who is about to start his shift at one of the many failing GameStop stores.

“Savage” by Yodie Summers – Part of why GameStop has been struggling is its refusal to adapt to the times, which was ironically shown when Marcos’s manager suggested he join an employee TikTok contest. Marcos sarcastically does the popular “Savage” dance to a reworked version of the Megan Thee Stallion song performed by Yodie Summers. The scene then shifts to Keith’s brother, Kevin (Pete Davidson), the world’s worst DoorDash driver.

“Stack It” by Kay Ro$e – As Kevin drops off food–some of which he’s already eaten–to a DoorDash customer, “Stack It” by Kay Ro$e plays in the background.

“Better Man” by Mark Batson and Blake YungDumb Money travels to the University of Texas at Austin with “Better Man” by Mark Watson and Blake Yung. There, viewers meet Riri (Myha’la Herrold) and Harmony (Talia Ryder), who decide to invest in GameStop together as their romantic relationship grows.

“You Make Me Wanna Purr” by Mark Batson and Kitty Dynamo – Meanwhile in Miami, Gabe is treating his pandemic like a holiday, spending it in a mansion. Next door, a group of younger people party to “You Make Me Wanna Purr” by Mark Batson and Kitty Dynamo as Gabe talks on the phone with hedge fund manager Steve Cohen (Vincent D’Onofrio) about shorting GameStop.

“Oz” by See You Next Year and SASH – As “Oz” by See You Next Year and SASH plays in the background, Riri and Harmony talk about potentially selling the GameStop stocks. Harmony tells Riri about how her dad worked at a chain grocery store until Wall Street funds bought it and “vampire-sucked all the money out of it” and declared bankruptcy, leaving her dad unemployed. The scene reminds Dumb Money viewers why so many people got behind Keith and invested in GameStop.

“Litt” by Mark Batson and Boom Boom – The rap song “Litt” by Mark Batson and Boom Boom serves as the introduction to Baiju Bhatt (Rushi Kota) and Vlad Tenev (Sebastian Stan), the co-CEOs of Robinhood. They created the commission-free stock trading site where most of the GameStop stock was being purchased in Dumb Money.

Dumb Money Terminology Guide & Key Phrases To Know

Dumb Money takes audiences deep into the stock market, investing, and Reddit to explore GameStop’s stocks. Here’s a guide to the terminology used.

“Humble” by Kendrick Lamar – As Baiju and Vlad drive off in their luxury cars, “Humble” by Kendrick Lamar ironically plays. This is once again juxtaposed in Dumb Money by Jenny singing along to the song in her not-so-luxury car, Marcos on the bus, Harmony and Riri riding a bike around campus, and Kevin in the back of his parent’s car.

“Boss” by Little Simz – Vlad is at a party where “Boss” by Little Simz is playing when he finds out that Robinhood owes $3 billion to the National Securities Clearing Corporation (NSCC), leading them to shut off buying of the GameStop stock.

“I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)” by Meat Loaf – In a soundtrack mostly made up of rap songs, “I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)” by Meat Loaf might seem like it doesn’t fit, but it works perfectly for the scene. Keith plays the song during one of his livestreams to celebrate the GameStop squeeze’s success and Wall Street’s subsequent panic.
