Dragon Ball Super Redefined Goku & Chi-Chi’s Relationship For the Worse With One Strange Line

Goku and Chi-Chi have always had a strange relationship in Dragon Ball canon, but Dragon Ball Super just made it weird. With one line, the entirety of Goku and Chi-Chi’s marriage – including and especially the fact that they’re parents – is totally redefined for the worse, and only served to confuse every Dragon Ball fan who heard it.

Goku and Chi-Chi’s relationship began in the early chapters of Dragon Ball, back when both of them were just children trying to find Master Roshi to help extinguish the fires on Fire Mountain. During their time together, Goku unwittingly touched Chi-Chi inappropriately, which Chi-Chi misinterpreted as a romantic advancement. From that point forward – in Chi-Chi’s mind, anyway – the two were destined to be together.

After years of not seeing one another, Chi-Chi and Goku would finally make their ‘relationship’ official during a World Martial Arts Tournament – the first (and last) tournament in which Chi-Chi herself was a contender. It was at this point that the two would become engaged to be married, and before long, these two love birds would conceive their first child, Gohan. The romantic history between these two has been well documented, but according to Goku, the two seemed to have skipped one major step in showing signs of affection for one another, as Goku and Chi-Chi have never even kissed.

Goku Admits That He & Chi-Chi Have Never Kissed – Despite Having 2 Children

Dragon Ball Super episode 60 “Into the Future Again Goku Black’s True Identity Revealed!”

Dragon Ball's Vegeta in shock that Goku doesn't know what a kiss is.

During Dragon Ball Super’s “Future” Trunks Saga, Goku and Vegeta travel with Future Trunks to his alternate timeline, as they agree to help him battle the mysterious Goku Black. While in this desolate future, Trunks, Goku, and Vegeta find themselves with the remaining human resistance, where Trunks reunites with Mai, who he thought was dead. While not dead, Mai was gravely injured, so much so that she couldn’t even chew a Senzu bean. So, Trunks chewed the bean and gave it to Mai mouth-to-mouth, which naturally turned into a passionate kiss once Mai made a full recovery.

Upon seeing this, Goku is confused, asking Vegeta why Trunks and Mai are ‘putting their mouths together’, apparently not knowing what a kiss is. Vegeta berates Goku about this, pointing out that he’s married with children, and that he should know what a kiss is. But, Goku maintains that he’s never done that before in his life.

Vegeta Confirms That ‘No Kissing’ Isn’t a Saiyan Thing, Goku is Just Weird

Dragon Ball's Vegeta in shock that Goku doesn't know what a kiss is.

When hearing that Goku had never kissed anyone before, Chi-Chi or otherwise, Dragon Ball fans could jump to the conclusion that perhaps kissing just isn’t something Saiyans naturally do. That would explain how Goku and Chi-Chi would have children and be happily married despite never having kissed, as it’s just something that would never occur to Goku to do. However, the fact that Vegeta knows what a kiss is, and is shocked to learn that Goku doesn’t, completely throws that theory out the window, especially given that Vegeta actually remembers Saiyan culture before his race’s extinction.

In truth, there’s no real explanation that makes sense here. While the easy answer is that this was supposed to just be a one-off joke, that’s not a good enough explanation for a series as lore-heavy as Dragon Ball. Therefore, all Dragon Ball Super accomplished with this one strange line was redefining Goku and Chi-Chi’s relationship for the worse, as it truthfully makes no sense that Goku wouldn’t know what a kiss is.
