Dragon Ball Super Officially Enters Hiatus After Akira Toriyama’s Passing

Following the tragic passing of Akira Toriyama, Dragon Ball Super is about to go on a hiatus. A reliable source shared a preview of pages for the upcoming issue of V Jump, which confirm that the series is taking a break. Speculation about the series’ future has been on the rise since the legendary creator passed, leaving its fate in limbo.

On X, @DbsHype (aka Hype) shared a peek at the upcoming issue of V Jump. The cover features Dragon Ball Super art, celebrating final chapter of the Super Hero Arc and confirming that the series will go on hiatus. As of yet, fans are still unsure about what the future of the Dragon Ball franchise will be.

A comment from Hype below the post notes that the reason behind the hiatus has not officially been revealed. This is important, as the series may just be following its previous pattern of having a pause when an arc is complete.

The Fate of Dragon Ball Super Is Still Undetermined

The series could continue under Toyotaro’s guidance, but it’s now going into hiatus

Given the loss of its creator, Dragon Ball is at a pivotal moment. Though Toyotaro had taken over the illustration of new Dragon Ball stories including Super, Toriyama was still writing the series at the time of his passing. As a result, it is not known how much of the story had been plotted and planned up to now. It is possible that the conclusion of the Super Hero Arc could be the finale for the series. It is also possible that Toyotaro could still have work left to provide or that he could continue the series.

However, it is much too early to know where the series’ future lies. It is not unheard of for Dragon Ball Super to go on hiatus. In the past, the manga has typically taken a one-month pause before another arc begins. Therefore, the future of Dragon Ball will not be revealed until the following month’s issue of V Jump. A decision may even still be under discussion given how little time has passed since the loss of Toriyama. For now, readers will need to be patient to find out if Dragon Ball Super‘s hiatus is temporary or indefinite.

Toriyama’s Work Will Continue To Inspire No Matter Where The Franchise Concludes

Akira Toriyama’s work has been some of the most influential in comic and anime history. Dragon Ball alone has influenced several American creators, Japanese game developers, and other people across multiple industries around the world. Additionally, other projects are still yet to be released, including an anime adaptation of Sand Land, which is coming to Disney+ this March. Dragon Ball Daima is also set to release later this year. While the fate of Dragon Ball Super will likely be announced within the next two months, there will be plenty of work Toriyama left behind to look forward to for the remainder of Dragon Ball’s 40th anniversary.

Dragon Ball Super Chapter 103 will be released on March 20 from Viz and MANGA Plus.
