Dragon Ball Super Finally Explains Gohan’s New Beast Form And Its Name

WARNING: Spoilers for Dragon Ball Super #102

Gohan’s incredible Beast Form powerup has put his strength on par with Goku’s, and Dragon Ball Super readers now finally know the origin of the mysterious transformation and its epic name. Beast Form is a transformation unique to Gohan, and it’s been revealed that a beloved character not only helped him attain it but also named the powerful form.

After his stunning defeat of Cell Max, Gohan can unleash his Beast Form at will and he demonstrates it before the anticipated sparing match against Goku. After being brought to Beerus planet in Dragon Ball Super chapter #102 and warming up against Goten and Trunks, Gohan’s new form stunned Goku and Vegeta with its, as Goku put it, “gnarly storm of chi.” Considering the similarities of this form with Gohan’s iconic Super Saiyan 2 transformation, it’s clear that Beast is the result of Gohan’s finally mastering his latent power.

Before Gohan gave an up-close demonstration of his new transformation, he provided key information on how he unlocked the form: “It was Piccolo who taught me the trick to better control.” The chapter reveals that the Namekian played a crucial part in teaching Gohan how to control his inner strength and Piccolo was also the one to name the compelling new form.

Piccolo Has Continued To Be Vital In Gohan’s Development

The beautifully vibrant climax of Beast Gohan and Orange Piccolo’s battle against Cell Max included the son of Goku launching his teacher’s Special Beam Cannon attack for the first time in the franchise. Piccolo’s iconic attack was an emotional technique to see Gohan pull off. Still, as Dragon Ball Super chapter #102 revealed, it was not the only powerful technique the Namekian played an essential part in teaching. Gohan harbored explosive power since he was a kid, and Piccolo has played a crucial role in helping him control it.

Piccolo’s teaching methods have not always been the softest, but it’s difficult to argue with the results. Besides essentially tricking Gohan into thinking his daughter Pan was in danger with the Red Ribbon Army, Piccolo’s lessons helped Gohan channel his latent powers. Near the beginning of Dragon Ball Z, Vegeta hypothesized that Gohan’s hidden power may result from his mixed Saiyan and human heritages. The control of that vast amount of power physically manifested into the Beast Form. With Piccolo playing such a vital role in its unlocking, it seems fitting for him to be the one to name it.

Now That Gohan’s In Control Of His Powers, He Could Be The Strongest

The strong bond between Gohan and Piccolo helped provide the most satisfying moments in the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero film. However, it’s also been a treat to see how the fruits of their relationship are paying off in the manga. Gohan has struggled for years to express his latent potential, and the Beast form represents his long-awaited mastery of that power. It’s fitting, thus, that Gohan achieved that milestone thanks to his first teacher and best friend, Piccolo.

Ultra Instinct Goku and Gohan’s Beast Form seem to be on even ground. Now that Gohan has learned to fully control his no-longer-latent potential with his Beast form, Dragon Ball Super readers are excited to see how far it will push Goku in the next chapters.
