Dragon Ball: Is Beerus Really Unbeatable? (& Who Might Defeat Him)

In Dragon Ball Super, Beerus often comes across as an unbeatable character that the Z-Warriors have no hope of ever defeating. This is certainly the impression that was left by the ending of the Battle of Gods saga, which saw Goku acquire divine power but still fall short of beating Beerus. But based on everything that’s happened, there’s now a question of whether or not the divide between Beerus and the Z-Warriors is as massive as it once was.

At the beginning of Dragon Ball Super, there was no question that Beerus was levels above Goku and Vegeta. As Universe 7’s God of Destruction and a being capable of destroying an entire planet on a momentary impulse, Beerus has certainly earned his reputation as one of the most feared and respected figures in the Dragon Ball universe. As things stand, the majority of the characters understand that Beerus has the power to wipe out their world, and that there’s not much they can do about it if that were to happen.

Looking at the progression of the story, it’s worth wondering if the air of invincibility that Beerus gives off in Dragon Ball Super is a bit misleading at this point. So far, the only characters confirmed to exceed him in power are of course the all-powerful Zen-Oh and Angels like Whis and the Grand Priest. How Beerus compares to his fellow Gods of Destruction is debatable, but his superiority over mortals has supposedly remained unchanged. However, characters like Goku, Jiren, and Broly have recently cast doubt on that.

Dragon Ball: Is Beerus Really Unbeatable? (& Who Might Defeat Him)

There were teases in Dragon Ball Super about each of the three mortals potentially having what it takes to bring him down. A few times, Beerus seemed intimidated by the gains Goku was making. Also, comments from Whis implied that by mastering Ultra Instinct, Goku may have finally become more powerful than Beerus. Later, Goku said himself that he thought Broly could be stronger than Beerus. As for Jiren, it was mentioned during the Tournament of Power that he had surpassed Universe 11’s God of Destruction, but it was never made abundantly clear if that declaration put him above Beerus as well.

Of the three, Goku is the one who has the best chance of securing a victory over Beerus. He’s stronger than Jiren and arguably would have beaten Broly if he had been able to access Ultra Instinct at will. All things considered, there’s good reason to believe that Ultra Instinct Goku, being on the level of the gods, could beat Beerus now. But unless a rematch between Goku and Beerus ever happens, a definitive answer to this question may never be offered. Until Dragon Ball Super puts Beerus back in action and reveals the full scope of his power in the anime, Universe 7’s God of Destruction may continue looking down on Goku and the rest of the Z-Warriors.
