Dr. Wendy Osefo Addressed Black Lives Matter Movement With Family

Last week on The Real Housewives of Potomac, Wendy Osefo took a moment to talk about the Black Lives Matter movement with her husband and children. The beginning of the RHOP season has been centered on criticism of Wendy’s aesthetic changes. However, the difficult conversation with her family cemented Wendy’s dedication to the rights of all people. Wendy proved she can be a social advocate while expressing her style and personality as she sees fit. In just one season, Professor Wendy can wear a bodysuit, be a political commentator and educate her kids about racial injustice. Gizelle Bryant, Ashley Darby, and newcomer Mia Thornton might drop the criticism after seeing her advocacy onscreen.

Dr. Wendy has been going above and beyond to address social justice since joining the Potomac cast. Last season, Wendy was quick to state that it is a necessity for Black women to get an education. She also took a hard stance on the casts’ duty to defy stereotypes about Black females. Wendy shared many thoughts on Candiace Dillard Bassett and Monique Samuels’ fight. She said, “it should be a safe space, but I also believe in brave spaces meaning being honest.” Fostering such spaces makes Wendy a strong social advocate and a powerful political commentator. Wendy considered leaving RHOP due to frustration but chose to stay and address the fight directly, and her presence was appreciated.

Wendy Has Always Advocated for BLM

Before diving into the difficult topics with her kids, Wendy made it clear that she was spending a lot of time during filming commenting on the Derek Chauvin trial. She said in her RHOP interview, “I think it’s unfair that Black parents have to break their children’s innocence to prepare them for the world that they live in.” After acknowledging this disparity, Wendy emphasized that she wanted her kids to be educated on racial injustice at home before looking outside for answers. Black Lives Matter has touched all media, from RHOP to RuPaul’s Drag Race. Wendy’s husband Eddie Osefo started the conversation.

Karter Osefo Asked Important Questions

Eddie said to their children, “Mommy and I wanted to have a talk with you so that you understand more. Police officers are taught to protect and serve.” When Wendy’s son Karter astutely asked why they were killing Black people, Eddie answered, “it’s one of those things where you may have ten police officers, but you may have some people who aren’t good people.” Her son wondered whether police officers would someday view him as a threat. Wendy and Eddie reiterated that their kids should choose to show respect to every person they see, regardless of their race or background.

The Advocacy Runs In The Family

Karter responded, “how about I become a person like Martin Luther King and I change that Black people don’t get to be a threat and white people don’t get to be a threat.” Wendy, with a long activist career before RHOP, expressed pride that her son is already thinking about how to make the world a better place.  The crucial conversation was a natural continuation of Wendy’s advocacy for Black lives on RHOP. Across housewives franchises, there has been an elevated effort to address Black Lives Matter, along with discrimination against AAPI communities and intersectional racism in general. While there is growth across Bravo programming when it comes to awareness and advocacy, everyone should take notes on Wendy’s approach to these important issues on The Real Housewives of Potomac.
