Captain Saru will be going through a “dignified” change to his Starfleet career in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, according to Doug Jones. Discovery season 5, which premieres in April on Paramount+, is the final season of the Star Trek series centering on Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery. Saru, the first Kelpien in Starfleet, is a fan-favorite character who has enjoyed a stellar Starfleet career, achieving the rank of Captain before Michael, although he now serves as the Discovery’s First Officer under Captain Burnham.
TrekMovie.com caught up with Star Trek: Discovery‘s Doug Jones on the red carpet at the 51st annual Saturn Awards. Jones discussed his feelings on Discovery season 5 as the final season, and he teased “more changes afoot” for Captain Saru. Read Jones’ quote below:
Saru has gone through so many changes throughout the entire series. My rank has changed, it’s gone up, up, up. My title and position on the bridge, or not the bridge, it’s been all over the place. In season 5, even more changes are afoot for Saru. A very dignified change for him. I can’t tell you what I’m going to be or do, but the tone for me, personally, yes, it changed intensely. Also, this [season] has a very sentimental vibe to it, more than the other seasons have, especially as we come to the end… [In Discovery season 5] I get an offer for a position within Starfleet. And what will that be? Will I accept it? Those are questions you have to find out in that first episode.
