Doogie Kamealoha M.D. Trailer Offers First Look At Disney+ Reboot

Disney+ has released the first trailer for their Doogie Howser reboot series Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. The original Doogie Howser ran from 1989 to 1993, and it starred a young Neil Patrick Harris as a genius teenage doctor. To update the show for a new generation, a female lead was chosen to take on the part of a new young doctor named Lahela ‘Doogie’ Kamealoha. Peyton Elizabeth Lee has been cast in the lead role, and she’s joined by Jason Scott Lee and Kathleen Rose Perkins, who play her parents. The reboot was created by Kourtney Kang, who previously wrote for How I Met Your Mother and Fresh Off the Boat.

The trailer, posted to YouTube by Disney+, offers an excellent look at what to expect from Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.  It makes reference to the original Doogie Howser show, with a colleague of Lahela’s explaining that they call her ‘Doogie’ because she’s just like the character from that show. After establishing that setup early, the trailer continues on to show that the new Doogie is struggling with a work/life balance. Doogie’s boss is even revealed to be her own mother, which looks to create friction as she feels like a subordinate at home and a daughter at work. Check out the trailer below:

Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. looks to deliver the heartwarming stories Disney is known for, along with a dose of family drama. With Disney+ recently finding success with other nostalgia-based revivals like The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, they are likely hoping that the Doogie Howser reboot can achieve the same. Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. is slated for a 10-episode first season, but a second season renewal could easily happen if it finds an audience. For those eager to check out Doogie Kamealoha, M.D., the show begins streaming on Disney+ on September 8th.
