Donkey Kong Country Is Coming To Nintendo Switch Online

The subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online will receive one of the best platformers ever made next week, as Donkey Kong Country is being added to the service. The Super Nintendo had no shortage of incredible platform games, but the only one to challenge Mario’s dominance on the system was the Donkey Kong Country trilogy developed by Rare.

There have been some amazing Donkey Kong Country games released since the ’90s, but the original trilogy is what put the series on the map. The sprites in the games were created using 3D models, which made them some of the most visually impressive titles on the Super Nintendo. Donkey Kong Country didn’t have the expansive world map of Super Mario World, but it had amazing level design and gameplay that was challenging, without being off-putting (unlike its incredibly difficult sequel.)

One of the benefits of subscribing to Nintendo Switch Online is access to NES & SNES games, which has periodically received new titles over time. The official Nintendo of America Twitter page has announced that Donkey Kong Country will be added to the service on July 15.

Along with Donkey Kong Country, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will also receive Natsume Championship Wrestling for the SNES app. The NES app for Nintendo Switch Online is also receiving a new title, with The Immortal being released on the same day. The July line-up of games is different in Japan, as they’ll be receiving Gun Dec and the original Shin Megami Tensei.

The Nintendo Switch Online service originally only launched with NES games, which made it seem like a bad deal, especially when so many Switch games have issues running online. The addition of SNES games, as well as access to Tetris 99 has made Nintendo Switch Online a worthwhile service for its price. The addition of games like Star Fox 2 to Nintendo Switch Online, alongside like classics like Super Metroid and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, mean that Switch owners will always have easy access to a library of awesome retro titles. The only downside to the Donkey Kong Country announcement is that it suggests that Nintendo won’t have any new game reveals over the next few weeks, as many fans have been expecting.

Donkey Kong Country, Natsume Championship Wrestling, and The Immortal will be available to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers on July 15, 2020.
