Donald Glover’s Hidden Reunion In New Amazon Show Makes Atlanta’s Ending Hurt That Much More, 2 Years Later

Donald Glover’s Hidden Reunion In New Amazon Show Makes Atlanta’s Ending Hurt That Much More, 2 Years Later

Although Amazon Prime’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith shares little to nothing in common with FX’s critically acclaimed Atlanta, a recent reunion on the show effectively reminds viewers how long it’s been since the afro-surrealist comedy ended. Based on the 2005 action comedy of the same name, Mr. & Mrs. Smith centers around two strangers who land a job with a spy agency that sees them take up the assumed identities of a married couple. Mr. & Mrs. Smith‘s violence and action make it a sharp departure from Glover’s work, but similar to Atlanta, it perfectly showcases the actor’s incredible range.

Despite the differences between the 2005 and 2024 Mr. & Mrs. Smith, their commonality is their commitment to their distinct style. 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith was a lot more action-focused, as it was meant to be a vehicle for its stars, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. However, the Amazon Prime Mrs. & Mrs. Smith takes a more somber and thematically dark approach to its storytelling – an approach that would also be perfect for Atlanta. In addition to Glover’s presence in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, there’s another Atlanta regular whose presencereminds viewers that Atlanta is sadly no more.

Atlanta’s Hiro Murai Is The Director For Mr & Mrs Smith Episodes 1 & 2

Murai’s distinct style and chemistry with Glover in Mr. & Mrs. Smith is reminiscent of their work in Atlanta.

As seen in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Atlanta director Hiro Muraiwas behind the camera for the first two episodes, which is why the first two episodes in particular feel very similar to Atlanta in terms of style and presentation. Additionally, Glover’s sardonic sense of humor that Atlanta‘s Earnest “Earn” Marks was notable for is on full display in the 2024 spy comedy-drama, which further highlights the effectiveness of the collaborations between Glover and Murai. While Mr. & Mrs. Smith leaves many questions unanswered, the prospect of a second season brings another Atlanta connection into question as well.

Mr & Mrs Smith Season 2 Can Continue The Amazon Show’s Atlanta Connections

Season 2 could feature other Atlanta alum should it ever happen.

Season 2 isn’t confirmed yet, but the collaborations between Glover, Murai, and Stephen Glover co-writing the fifth episode suggests that more behind-the-scenes talent and even actorscould make appearances in the second season should the opportunity present itself. While it isn’t a certainty, Glover could any of his co-stars or even the supporting actors who made memorable appearances in Atlanta in Mr. & Mrs. Smith considering the effectiveness of their collaborations. As seen throughout Atlanta‘s four-season run, Mr. & Mrs. Smith could benefit from Glover interacting with the Atlanta alum again.

Not only were many of the episodes in Atlanta hilarious, but they also highlighted many pertinent issues in communities of color – chiefly among them, Black people, while also demonstrating the ability to appeal to broader audiences unfamiliar with most of the jokes and subjects covered. While Glover himself directed a handful of Atlanta‘s episodes, Murai’s distinct visual fidelity and attention to detail regarding set pieces and authentic casting are some of the main reasons the show is sorely missed. If Mr. & Mrs. Smith brings in more Atlanta cast and crew, it would be the closest to a reunion viewers could get.
