Does Poor Things Have A Post-Credits Scene?

The new dark comedy Poor Things releases nationwide in theaters on December 22, 2023, raising the question of whether there will be a post-credits scene at the end of the film. Directed by acclaimed Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Dear, The Favourite) and written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Ton McNamara (The Favourite, Cruella), Poor Things has emerged as an early favorite in several categories of the upcoming 2024 Academy Awards.

Emma Stone plays Bella Baxter, a resurrected woman brought back to life by Willem Dafoe’s mad scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter. “God” surgically implants the brain of Bella’s unborn daughter into her head, resulting in Bella developing from infancy in the body of her adult mother. The bizarre premise surprisingly creates a wonderful portrait of feminist-driven fantasy, featuring wonderful dreamscapes, hilarious dialogue, fascinating characters, and sharp metaphors that pertain to the modern pitfalls of a patriarchal society.

Poor Things Does Not Have A Post-Credits Scene

Poor Things runs for a total of 2 hours and 21 minutes but the film does not have a post-credits scene at the end. While viewers who are mesmerized by the film or baffled by its ending might not be eager to jump right out of their seats as the credits roll, those who do not stick around throughout the credits will not be missing any additional scenes in the movie. Much of the colorful and beautiful artwork that was put on display throughout the film is continued throughout the credits, making it still worth watching while viewers digest the film.

Why Poor Things Didn’t Need An End Credits Scene

Poor Things does a great job of wrapping up its epic tale before the credits roll, landing on a thoughtful and powerful endpoint that seals the central plot, theme, and developmental arcs of all the main characters. For these reasons, a post-credits scene at the end of Poor Things isn’t necessary, especially since the likelihood of a sequel is incredibly low considering that it was based on a 1992 standalone novel of the same name written by Alasdair Gray.

Poor Things is nominated for 7 Golden Globes, including Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), and Best Actress (Musical or Comedy). The film recently made the shortlist for the 2023 Academy Awards in three categories, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, and Visual Effects. Poor Things is rated R for strong and pervasive sexual content, graphic nudity, disturbing material, gore, and language, and currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 92%.
