Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa teases his unique relationship with his new companion, Ruby Sunday. Making his first appearance in the last Doctor Who 60th anniversary special, “The Giggle,” Gatwa will soon take over full-time as the series’ Fifteenth Doctor. Gatwa is joined in Doctor Who season 14 by actress Millie Gibson, who will play his companion Ruby Sunday.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Gatwa describes himself and Gibson as a pair that “would’ve gotten in trouble at school.” He went on to say that “the casting of Ruby Sunday and seeing Ruby Sunday in the scripts” was incredibly formative to how he portrayed the Time Lord. Yeah, I think it was Millie that kind of finalized what my Doctor would be. She came into the audition, and I instantly thought to myself, “Oh, we would’ve gotten in trouble at school. We would’ve been in the detention classroom together at school and still cackling. We’re the two kids that the teacher said something silly and says, ‘Stop laughing,’ and you just can’t help yourself but keep [laughing].” That’s the rapport.

Doctor Who Might Be Preparing The Next Big Friendship After The Doctor & Donna
While who plays the Time Lord is certainly essential to a great season on Doctor Who, a strong Doctor-companion relationship can make a season shine. The series has had some iconic companions over the years, including Sophie Aldred’s Ace, Arthur Darvill’s Rory, and Bonnie Langford’s Melanie, the latter of whom will also appear among the Doctor Who season 14 cast. If Gatwa’s claims pan out to be true, the show could be looking at another legendary companion in Ruby Sunday.
Ruby Sunday and the Fifteenth Doctor have big shoes to fill following the Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials. The specials brought back Catherine Tate’s Donna Noble and David Tennant as the newly-minted Fourteenth Doctor, reintroducing one of the show’s greatest friendships. Even over a decade later, the strength of the Doctor and Donna shone through in these episodes.
Thus, Doctor Who might be looking to fill in the void created by the Doctor and Donna in depicting Ruby Sunday and the Fifteenth Doctor. Gibson will bring different strengths to the role than Tate’s Donna; whereas Donna and the Doctor’s friendship was heartwarming due to its history, Gibson will offer a younger (and perhaps more mischievous, as Gatwa implies) perspective on her Ruby Sunday companion role.
