Doctor Who: New BTS Image Of John Barrowman’s Return As Captain Jack

John Barrowman, who reprises his role as Captain Jack Harkness in the Doctor Who holiday special, shares a behind-the-scenes image of his return. Barrowman debuted as Captain Jack in season 1, also playing a role in seasons 3 and 4. Additionally, the actor led the Doctor Who spinoff series Torchwood, which focused on a team of alien hunters. It ran from 2006-2011, with the show garnering more positive reception as it went on. After Torchwood, Barrowman went nearly a decade without playing Captain Jack. However, he returned in Doctor Who season 12 last year, with many viewers thrilled by his appearance after so long away.

Captain Jack will play a role in the upcoming Doctor Who holiday special. Titled “Revolution of the Daleks,” it airs January 1 on BBC America. As of now, Barrowman is only slated to appear in the special episode. However, he recently spoke about his desire to return again in the future, expressing his love for Doctor Who and Captain Jack. The show is currently in the midst of filming season 13, which will be Jodie Whittaker’s first without co-stars Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole. However, despite the departures, it’s unknown if Barrowman will be a part of the upcoming season.

This week, Barrowman celebrated his Doctor Who return with a behind-the-scenes image. In it, he participates in a photo shoot for the holiday special, striking a “classic Captain Jack pose.” Check out Barrowman’s photo below:

Barrowman’s post should only increase excitement for the new Doctor Who episode. It will be interesting to see Captain Jack’s role in the special, especially with the confirmation he’ll finally meet the Thirteenth Doctor during it. This is an interaction many viewers have waited a long time for, so hopefully it doesn’t disappoint. Though the holiday special will mark the end of one chapter for Whittaker’s character, Captain Jack’s involvement could kick start an exciting new one.

It’s hard to say with certainty when Barrowman’s character will next appear on Doctor Who. It helps the actor is clearly game to return beyond the upcoming episode. He’s also been very open about his commitment to the show in the past, speaking about the large impact it’s had on his life. Hopefully, Captain Jack’s role is well-received. Barrowman has indicated this could make future appearances more likely. However, viewers will have to tune into the Doctor Who holiday special later this week to see how Captain Jack’s return comes together.
