Doctor Strange 2 May Have Hinted At Two Multiverse Spider-Man Variants

Doctor Strange 2 May Have Hinted At Two Multiverse Spider-Man Variants

Doctor Strange and America Chavez’s trip through the multiverse in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may have included a hint at two famous Spider-Man variants. From Stephen’s powerful counterpart, Sinister Strange, to the show-stealing Alligator Loki, Phase 4 of the MCU has made it clear that the multiverse allows for the existence of countless different versions of each Marvel character. Although Loki, Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man have already met some of their infinite variants, there are many others that could still show up.

Spider-Man: No Way Home only introduced two new universes to the MCU: Andrew Garfield’s and Tobey Maguire’s. Had Doctor Strange not contained his spells, however, many other variants from unknown universes could have arrived. After all, Spider-Man is more closely connected to his multiversal variants than other Marvel characters. This is why spider-related characters such as Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen have made a name for themselves in Marvel comics after arriving from a different universe.

While Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness didn’t feature any Spider-Man variant per se, it may have shown at least two of the universes they inhabit. When Doctor Strange and America Chavez fall through different universes during their escape from Scarlet Witch, one of the realities they crash through before landing in the MCU’s 838 universe looks like a black-and-white film, and another looks like a futuristic, moonlit metropolis. These could be the Noir universe, home of Spider-Man Noir, and the 2099 universe, home of Miguel O’Hara.

Doctor Strange 2 May Have Hinted At Two Multiverse Spider-Man Variants

Spider-Man Noir is an investigative reporter with roughly the same origin story as the main Peter Parker, but in his case, it’s set during the Great Depression. Miguel O’Hara, also known as Spider-Man 2099, lives in a future timeline where the original Spider-Man is revered as an icon. The home universes of Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Man 2099 are also populated by alternate versions of other famous Marvel figures. The Noir universe features characters such as a detective Wolverine, a pirate Namor, and a twisted Professor X. The 2099 universe houses characters such as a high-tech Punisher and a Terminator-like Ghost Rider, and while utopic, it is constantly threatened by the likes of Doctor Doom, Venom, and an even more savage Hulk. Besides many appearances in the comics, Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Man 2099 are an important part of Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, where they’re voiced by Nicolas Cage and Oscar Isaac, respectively.

The possibilities of seeing Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Man 2099 make their live-action debut in the MCU anytime soon are low, considering that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man already experienced his multiversal adventure in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Still, a hint at the Noir and 2099 realities might suggest that many iconic multiversal variants live somewhere out there in the vast MCU multiverse. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness only features a limited number of alternate universes, but it could be the first step into a much bigger multiverse.
