Disney’s New Frozen Sequel Reveals A Frozen 3 Story Problem

In 2019 Frozen II transported audiences back to the kingdom of Arendelle six years after the release of its predecessor, but plans for a follow-up present a potential Frozen III story problem. The first sequel follows the beloved Elsa, Queen of Arendelle, who begins to hear a mysterious voice calling out to her. Upon answering the voices, Elsa is forced to begin a quest that will ensure the protection of her kingdom, taking on the mantle of protector of the Enchanted Forest. Much like Frozen, Frozen II performed remarkably at the box office, bringing in $1.450 billion and leaving fans wanting more.

After Elsa becomes the protector of the Enchanted Forest at the end of Frozen II, her sister, Anna, takes on the title of the new Queen of Arendelle. Additionally, she also accepts the marriage proposal of her love interest, Kristoff. Following the franchise’s success, the latest Disney cruise ship, Disney Wish, includes a Frozen dining experience that shows what happens to Anna and Kristoff following the events of Frozen IIArendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure places attendees at the heart of Anna and Kristoff’s engagement party and highlights her acceptance from her subjects as the new Queen of Arendelle.

While Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure is relatively broad in its approach to its narrative, it’s possible that its existence could create some problems regarding the future of the franchise. This is due to the fact that the Frozen II ending seemingly tied up the rest of Elsa’s story quite nicely, with the new theatrical cruise experience bringing a satisfying close to Anna and Kristoff’s storyline. Therefore, it makes it hard to see where a third Frozen film will fit in with the current arc, as the lead characters don’t have anywhere to go.

Will Frozen 3 Ever Happen?

While Disney has provided answers in regards to the character’s fates following the events of Frozen II, it’s entirely possible that audiences may not have seen the end of Elsa, Anna, and Kristoff. Regardless of the events of Frozen II  and Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure, Disney could potentially come up with a new story for Anna and Elsa. Given Frozen II‘s success as the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time, it’s unlikely that Disney would decide not to revisit the kingdom of Arendelle in the future. However, given the current state of Anna and Elsa’s respective storylines, a third entry into the franchise could see the introduction of some new faces that fans have never seen before.

Currently, there has been no new information regarding a third Frozen film. However, given the six-year gap between Frozen and Frozen II, the possibility hasn’t been ruled out yet. Frozen II faced a significant challenge given the critical acclaim of its predecessor, and yet it managed to defy all expectations surrounding the film. Therefore, if Disney were to begin developing the third film in the Frozen franchise, it would need to be a story worth telling.
