Disney’s Long-Delayed Pirates Of The Caribbean Plans Made Them Fall Behind A Rival Studio

Disney’s Long-Delayed Pirates Of The Caribbean Plans Made Them Fall Behind A Rival Studio

After the success of Margot Robbie’s Barbie, the prospect of the A-lister starring in a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie is exciting, but Disney’s long-delayed project has caused it to fall behind a competitor studio. Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean movie hasn’t made substantial progress since its 2020 announcement despite the actress gaining popularity in recent years. Fans of Robbie can look forward to a different studio capitalizing on the success of Barbie, as she’ll appear in a prequel for another popular franchise in the near future.

Famed producer Jerry Bruckheimer gave a surprising update regarding Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean‘s future, assuaging worries concerning its status and offering hope that the fresh take on the beloved franchise will come to fruition. That’s positive news for the future, but it’s not enough for Disney, especially considering Robbie’s other big project has received more substantial — and consistent — updates. Although Bruckheimer promises to deliver an amazing movie with the next Pirates of the Caribbean installment, Disney is still considerably behind.

Margot Robbie’s Pirates Of The Caribbean Movie Is Still Struggling After Barbie

Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean movie will see the actress reuniting with Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) writer Christina Dodson for a project that many believe will put the star in a role similar to that of Captain Jack Sparrow. As exciting as that sounds after the pair’s last collaboration, no substantial progress has been made on the Pirates of the Caribbean project yet. While it’s anyone’s guess as to why things are so slow, the recent SAG-AFTRA strikes could delay things even further, preventing the movie from making progress.

The SAG-AFTRA strikes have stalled or outright halted many productions as actors have fought for better compensation and working conditions in Hollywood. Bruckheimer and the other producers at Disney may have stalled the movie’s progress to show solidarity with those crucially affected by the strikes. Even so, it’s still puzzling as to why Disney isn’t capitalizing on Robbie’s Barbie momentum to generate interest in the movie. It would potentially revitalize a franchise that has been seeing diminished returns and interest. Hollywood is a very competitive place, so if Disney fails to capitalize on Robbie’s star power, its rivals will seize the opportunity instead.

Warner Bros. Is Prioritizing Margot Robbie’s Ocean’s 11 Prequel

Unlike the Pirates of the Caribbean spinoff, Warner Bros.’s Ocean’s Eleven prequel plans are still underway. While prequels and reboots run the risk of isolating audiences familiar with the original work, this movie’s producer promises Ocean’s Eleven‘s prequel with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will stay true to the source material despite introducing more contemporary themes and ideas. One of the more interesting ideas presented in the prequel is the inclusion of a love story — something that hasn’t really been explored in previous installments. In addition to the Barbie success, this love story angle would capitalize on Robbie’s chemistry with Gosling, putting them both on-screen together yet again.

While this news might be concerning to some, it is undeniably interesting and just might be the new blood necessary to revitalize the Ocean’s Eleven franchise. This third reboot might benefit from showing audiences both male and female con-artists as opposed to the all-male and all-female criminals of the previous movies. Robbie and Gosling have already displayed their magnetic and wildly fun chemistry in Barbie, so it isn’t a stretch to assume the pairing could work extremely well in a crime movie. And Barbie will certainly ramp up the excitement ahead of the prequel’s release, meaning Warner Bros. is currently doing a better job of utilizing Robbie’s talents than Disney.

Disney’s Pirates Of The Caribbean Delays Will Continue Now

Whereas Pirates of the Caribbean 6 has yet to go into production despite its 2020 announcement, Warner Bros. has a huge leg up in that its Ocean’s Eleven prequel has been in production since 2022. With that said, there are more Ocean’s Eleven prequel details that have already been revealed, such as the movie’s 1962 Monte Carlo setting and its love story focus. While Robbie fans are left to speculate on whether the Pirates of the Caribbean project will be a sequel, prequel, or spinoff, they currently know far more about the Ocean‘s Eleven prequel. They can more than likely look forward to that coming to theaters before Robbie sets sail on the high seas.
